Hi Charles, CJ> I am working on taking a basic open water course... CJ> I understand SSI has been around about 15-20 years how do they rate compared to the "BIG" guys? From what I've heard all of the agencies are all very close on course content. CJ> If I take a open water course with SSI and then later on I want to take a course that they don't offer will PADI recognize my open water rating from SSI? I think so...just call the PADI shop, tell them your an SSI open water diver and you want to take their specialty course CJ> However the SSI instructor seemed more genuinely enthusiastic about the sport and what he is doing and no high pressure sales. It sounds to me like you've already made up your mind on the instructor (THE most important part in any course) and just want someone to tell you SSI is OK. SSI is Great, I am an SSI Master Diver and have Never had Any problems with them! But then again, I've not heard bad about any of the Agencies...But I have about some instructors. I as well as another are interested in taking your class. I am right now finishing up my lifegaurding class, and wish to take scuba after this. I just wanted to gently point out another blunder in Diver Mag. This is in the April issue: there are a couple of glaring errors in the diver's gear/setup that I am sure that you are aware of, but possibly never thought of. Just to mention two, why is the diver's lp whip to his bc disconnected, thereby making his bc's built in reg useless and causing the bc itself to be manually inflated, while ice diving? Also, where are the safety lines to the cameraman and the diver in the picture? As you should be aware, when ice diving the diver's should always be attached to a safety line! This SAFEty measure is noticeably absent, which suggests that a professional diving company such as your mag supports breaking safety rules, and supports shoddy diving which I pointed out regarding last month's issue. I really do enjoy your mag, but *please* start taking the things you lend your name and support to more seriously. Promote thoughtful and safe diving for us all. Thanks for your time, and sorry if I seem a little harsh, I am just trying to make helpful suggestions... One of them has a turtle >research station. Klien bonaire is only about 1.5 miles across at its longest point. It is completely surrounded by healthy coral reefs. There is only a small amount of beach shoreline for the use of the turtles. Dozens of vacationers frolicking on the beach will not bee well received by the turtle population. Currently, even day trippers avoid the beach during the egg laying season. The islanders are very sensitive to protecting Klien Bonaire. The threat is from outside interests. SB>The reef around this island is managed quite successfully by the resort >operators with little disturbance. The are in question is simply too small to support such development. The pristine conditions at Klien are because there is no development there. The Operators on Bonaire are some of the most conscientious in the world, however on need only compare the reef in front of any of the resorts with that on Klien, to see that even with due care, development will damage the reef area. Damage due to runoff, grey water, sewage, fuel spills from boats, garbage, algae from fertilizers leaching into the sea, are all very likely. Klien is a barren rocky island, the highest point perhaps 8 feet above the water level. No soil to filter human waste. No mangroves. Only scattered divi trees. Landscaping a property alone could doom the reef. I hope this can help you make your decision. this is not a large island, and cannot rebound the way that Heron island and similar GBR resort islands have. This is the Best, most unaffected diving on the leeward side of Bonaire. A 5 star resort would spoil the reef for all the other resorts on Bonaire, and have tragic effects on the local ecosystems and economy. As these 5 star places tend not to favor divers, the likely hood of customer pressure to make it ecologically friendly is poor.
