Yes, PADI will accept the equivalent rating of any of the "accepted" training organizations. You won't have any trouble with an SSI card. CJ> Equipment, well what can be asked about this subject? Get the best quality that you can afford, make sure it fits well. I doubt very seriously you will find the best mixture of brands in just one shop. Look around, and remember that the dive shops cost more than mail order because they provide valuable information and an opportunity to actually handle the gear before you buy. They also give you a place to gripe if something fouls up (as will happen). Scuba gear is not a TV or stereo equipment.....personally, I will always buy from a shop. I mean looking at the course CJ> curriculum they appear to be as concerned with safety as everyone is CJ> and so on. From what I have seen, they also seem to be less concerned with "technical" issues. A trend that has been true of the others, but seemingly more so with them. My opinion is that the more you know the better and safer decisions you can make while diving. I've had both Naui and Padi training and would recommend either. CJ> If I take a open water course with SSI and then later on I want CJ> to take a course that they don't offer like PADI's "Medic First Aid" CJ> will PADI recognize my open water rating from SSI? Most have a "cut off point" where the recognize everything below a level, but I don't know currently what that point is. CJ> Equipment, well what can be asked about this subject? I guess this will CJ> have to wait until I get in the water and try some pieces to see what CJ> fits and feels right. I would buy first quality (ScubaPro, US Divers and similar) used before I bought some of the other brands new. I've seen the bladders in cheap BC's pop, the quick disconnect nipples pull out, regulators quit, computers malfunction, etc. This is not so bad in a pool, or even in a shallow dive in a familiar spot, but if you are on a dive cruise in the South Pacific, it means the end of diving (and can threaten your safety!)
