We'll be there the second week of -> May. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you, but you'd have to be real lucky to plan to see a Manatee in May. The manatees move into warm water, most notably in Crystal River, when the seas get colder than the springs. The springs run from 68 to 72 degrees. In may, the seas, rivers and all the other places manatees like are noticably warmer than 72. Lee --- PCBoard (R) v15.22/M 2 * Origin: The Cross Roads BBS Ft. Check your log & messages. I signed AM>on your BBS a while ago. I appreciate your help. So I see. Looks as though Mike has logged on a few times as well. I'm glad to have you guys on board. AM>Hopefully we'll meet in May when I'm coming down AM>to get wet . How does the water around your area AM>compare to Key Largo? Also, my dive buddy for the AM>trip wants to try Key West. How does that compare AM>to Key Largo? May should be a good time of year to enjoy the warm water. As you head further south (Ft. Lauderdale to Key Largo to Key West) the water will get progressively warmer. Our water temps are currently 73 in the surf zone, and it's probably a few degrees warmer in the Keys. As for the diving, my personal bias would be to enjoy the variety of dive options from West Palm Beach down through the Keys. There's world-class drift diving over artificial reefs (wrecks) and live reefs in the WPB area, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami have a terrific combination of wrecks and reefs at all depths to satisfy beginers and experienced divers. The Keys is best known as "America's Caribbean" with shallow reef diving and limited wrecks. The best-known deep wrecks are located in Key Largo (Duanne & Bibb), and another personal favorite is the Thunderbolt in Marathon. Key West is more of a party-town and less of a dive destination, although there are several excellent wrecks in the area. Let me know if you need any information on these areas. --- [\] Diver Down [\] * Origin: [\] Diver Down BBS [\] Ft. We'll be AM>there the second week of May. Not likely, Al. We usually see the manatees in the early winter months when they swim into the warmer waters in the Intercoastal Waterway. The manatees are better-spotted across the state in the Crystal River area. AM>Also, where would you advise going to see them? Sea World in Orlando? :) AM>We're busy planning our itinerary now, and once AM>again we're planning two weeks worth of diving AM>and cramming it into one week . Understood. My recommendation would be to focus your diving on the east coast areas from West Palm down through the Keys.
