--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: D2R00005 Date: 02/19/96 From: DEBBI RING Time: 09:55pm \/To: CHUCK DUFFNEY (Read 1 times) Subj: Learning to dive Hi Chuck. You are wise to research instruction facilities. These questions can help you decide which program is for you. 1. Who is the certifying agency? (NAUI, PADI, SSI, YMCA, etc.) There are a number of scuba certification agencies. Although there are slight differences in the specific training requirements and course content, all must meet the requirements established by an industry association called the RSTC-Recreational Scuba Training Council. All recognized certification agencies meet the same MINIMUM standards and are recognized world wide. 2. What certification will I earn? For what depth will I be qualified 3. What is included in the course costs? (Lessons, Books, Registration Fees, Pool Fees, Open Water Dives, Equipment Rental) 4. What personal gear is to be provided by the student? 5. What is the course schedule? 6. What are the make-up policies for missed class or pool sessions? 7. What are the make-up policies for missed Open Water Dives? 8. What if I have problems with the course material or skills? Most courses are designed so that the material can be learned, and skills mastered in the allotted time. Sometimes there are those students who require extra attention either in the class or pool. Find out the policy regarding extra help. Most dive centers provide it at no additional cost. 9. What is the class size? How many students per instructor? Although referrals from friends carry a lot of weight, visit several dive centers to see which one appeals to you. Look for a full service dive center with professional and courteous staff, one in which they will take the time to answer your questions. These are just some questions to get you started. There is little that compares to the feeling of scuba diving. Flying virtually weightless in the vast ocean, meeting the creatures of the deep on their own terms, and discovering a 4th dimension is something many people only do in dreams. Check out the dive shops in your area, and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. You may want to take the course with a friend. Its always more fun, and youll have a ready-made buddy!! ... And now, some words of wisdom: From My Computer in S.W. Hlne Actually, I believe I read about some tests of a system quite like the one shown in the movie. I don't, however remember much about how they turned out or why I haven't read more. What I do know for sure is that there were tests in which a mouse remained submerged in a highly oxygenated fluid for some time, with no ill effects as I recall. BS-> My guess is that you'd need your own boat and a metal BS-> detector. Most of the popular dive places are geological BS-> dives and don't offer much in terms of artifacts. There BS-> are stories of burning French boats in the middle of the BS-> lake...dropping goodies for the likes of us. In 1758 the British intentionally sank a lot of bateaux, and a radeau, hoping to "store" them under the winter ice, then come back and get them in the spring. They lost the spot where the bateaux were sunk, and the radeau (Land Tortoise) fluttered down off a cliff into 100+ feet of water. They didn't get that one, either! Yes, using a metal detector is the usual way to find cannonballs, etc. I'm in Schenectady... 15 mi west of Albany. Mike ... Jay, it was my BBS, the Florida cracker she lost the messages on. I had updated my system and lost my message base. As you see I have it back now and a lot more interesting board. I am located between Sarasota and Venice on the west coast of Florida. About three years ago I had both the Sarasota and Venice Diving Clubs using my board. I am retired from the Navy where I once worked on a Diving Ship out of Norfolk, Va. In my youth I did some free diving myself. Looking forward to hearing some interesting stories now that I can receive these diving echos. If I can help in any way, feel free to ask. Donald Keen "A true Florida Cracker" ...
