Hlne sorry to butt in, Helene. my name's craig from sydney, Oz. (don't worry, i tend to whisper when i write). anyway, its my guess that the big blue fish you saw was a blue wrasse (or some kind of yankee relative). we have heaps of them here - in fact, its almost impossible to do a dive without them here. my opinion of touching animals u/w is that if they don't appear stressed about it, then its ok - so long as touching them is just that, and not prolonged at that. if they try to get away when you reach out then you probably shouldn't be trying to. the best idea is just to sit there and let them come to you. i once had an octopus reach out with one of its arms and wrap it around my wrist a few times just to check me out. a lot of the time you'll find that the animals are just as interested in you as you are in them - so long as you don't appear threatening (which is kind of hard, considering what you probably look like to them with bubbles and all). the best example i have of this is the grey nurse sharks (i think you guys call them sand tigers) i sometimes dive with north of sydney. they are obviously extremely interested in you, but they haven't let me touch them yet. i've come close, but considering that they're designed to live down there, and we're just visitors in their world, they'll decide whether they want us to touch them or not. hope i haven't rambled too much. happy diving, brudy. --- Blue Wave/RA v2.12 [NR] * Origin: OzWorld BBS - SCUBA Diving in the land of Oz.
