I am -> not one of those young upstarts who knows all about all. I am smart -> enough to know that you old dive gods have a lot of knowledge to -> share and are great to learn from. Oh by the way by old I don't mean -> decrepit with age, I mean Experience dive junkies. How has the Bug -> hunting been down there? I'm not exactly old in years, but not young either (48 next birthday). I don't take offense either way, however. Old is better than the alternative. The information issue makes us about even. I've learned a lot from newer divers too. Up until about 5 years ago, I'd never used a BCD, didn't have an octopus or a depth guage. I generally used the boat's depth sounder and the Navy tables to plan dives and a watch to time them. When my wife got certified, she learned with a full package of equipment and got what she was used to (always a good idea). About a year later, we wanted to go on a commercial trip with some friends and I had to upgrade or get left behind. I started with a guage set and cheap BC, learning both quickly. When I got a chance to pick up a computer cheaply (USD Monitor I), I did. Since then, I've upgraded my BC, still use the same computer and traded my octopus for an integrated power inflator/safety second. Obviously I've become a believer. It's not that I'm not safe with what I used to use, it's just not nearly as convenient or pleasant. Why suffer if you don't have to? The downside to all this is, lacking good advice on equipment, I didn't upgrade far enough the first time through. I've got more spare equipment than some dive shops. I like to help others avoid my mistakes and get what they want the first time out. Very few people I know have tried diving and then given up. Almost all become avid divers. This is largly a function of where I live. Since Ft. Lauderdale and Miami have two of the most active artificial reef/wreck operations in the world, there's more reefs availale from here down through the Keys than most people can dive in a lifetime and the visibility is consistently good, almost everyone who tries the sport here falls in love with it. As for bug hunting, I gave active participation up along time ago. When you can dive any time you want, you get spoiled. I don't go out when the seas are over about 3 feet and I don't go where there are crowds, which there almost always are during the early part of lobster season. Still, I get a lobster stamp every year and pick up a couple here and there when the chance appears (got two in the freezer right now). Word has it that lobsters in the Ft. Pierce area (about 100 miles north) are not as actively fished and tend to grow much larger. One of these days, I'll take the time to find out first hand. It's a bit of a trip by boat, however, requiring around 4 hours each way when the seas are calm. That means I have to plan to spend at least one night out since 8 hours of boat travel, a couple of relatively deep dives and the related surface intervals is a bit much for a single day. I teach Oceanography and Marine Biology at a high school in central Florida(Orlando). I don't dive at this time due to a shoulder injury that prohibits me from swimming. S>Dawn Marcova Hi Dawn, how've you been? Haven't 'talked' with you in a while. As I see it, one of the major problems with keeping any animal in captivity is the cost/profit problem. These aquariums and zoos only have so much space and resources to allocate to the various species they hold. Look how small whale tanks are--especially when compared to the entire ocean! One of the things I'd like to see is more massive tanks/habitats for these creatures. Unfortunately, those 'shows' at places like Seaworld and such are necessary to help fund their research projects (if any) and pay for upkeep.
