GL* Did anyone see the report on CBC's Fifth Estate about learning to scuba * dive on Tuesday night? If so what did you think about it? It was Marketplace, and it was totally BOGUS! I think any self respecting diver who watched it should write to them & tell them that before they do a story on this type of topic, some good solid UNBIASED research would be in order. Not only did they never contact a world renowned & impartial source such as DAN to see how out of touch their findings were, but I'll wager that NONE of the people that researched the piece are even divers. About 10 percent of the population has this condition DM>many don't know it until they dive and become bent. DM>If you truly have this condition, you should not dive. Even divers which DM>stay in the limits of the computer or table get bent if this condition DM>exist. I am curious, were you using table or computer? What was DM>your maximum bottom time and depth? PFO, or Patent Forame Ovale is as common as Dan has mentioned. However, it can not be detected with having an echocardiogram done. An echocardiogram is not a normal part of a physical unless one's physician suspects cardiovascular problems, or an insurance company is paying for the physical and the amount of insurance involved is large. I had an echo cardiogram done some years ago, so I can tell you I do not have a PFO. However, one of the cardiologists who examined me dives, I asked if he had checked to see if he had a PFO and he said no. I was amazed that he had not checked. DAN figures of DCS victims who later find they have a PFO are amazingly high. I suspect a percentage of those with "undeserverd" DCS may well have a PFO, however I do not think this study has been done yet. YOUR MEDICAL CONDITION...MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE...COULD BE A SIGNIFICANT REASON FOR YOUR HIT. MEDICATIONS THAT YOU'RE TAKING FOR DEPRESSION COULD ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR HIT. I AM NOT A DOCTOR...BUT I CAN OFFER TWO SMALL PIECES OF ADVICE. 1. CALL D.A.N. (DIVERS ALERT NETWORK). THEY RUN A RESEARCH FACILITY IN DURHAM N.C. THE NUMBER TO CALL IS: (919)684-2948. THEY MAINTAIN A LIST OF MEDICATIONS NOT COMPATIBLE FOR DIVING AND MAY BE ABLE TO HELP RECOMMEND AN ALTERNATE MEDICATION...IF YOUR DOCTOR WILL APROVE IT. 2. THE SECOND LITTLE TID BIT INVOLVES ENROLLING YOURSELF IN A DOPPLER STUDY PROGRAM. THEY ATTACH A SENSOR TO YOUR BODY AND YOU EITHER GO DIVING WITH IT OR GO IN A HYPERBARIC CHAMBER. IT MEASURES MICRO- BUBBLES IN YOUR BLOOD STREAM. FROM THE DATA GATHERED YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CONTRUCT CUSTOM DIVE TABLES TO MATCH YOUR PHYSIOLOGY. MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE TO DO THE STUDY IN THE CHAMBER...SINCE YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN BENT...YOU DO STAND A MUCH GREATER CHANCE OF HAVING IT OCCUR AGAIN...AND IF YOU DO HAVE BUBBLE TROUBLE IN THE CHAMBER...YOUR ALREADY TO RECEIVE THE TREATMENT! IF THESE MEASURES FAIL!!! PLEASE BE HAPPY THAT YOUR ALIVE AND NOT PARALIZED FROM YOUR EARLIER HIT.
