I will try clearing after every JS> 4-5 feet... and see what happens. Thats the plan; you may even try clearing continuously or every 2 feet. Quite often, unfortunately, a more experienced diver will rocket to the bottom and not notice his bud is having troubles clearing; forcing the other diver to either follow and hurt their ears or be left alone. Be sure your partner understands your *gonna* take your time getting down and *will not* hurt your ears for something as silly as scuba diving. A dive lasts half an hour; ear damage can last a lifetime. (end of sermon) JS> With regards to your friend... do you know if this can be attributed to JS> some kind of medical condition? Can you have a weak eardrum? Well.. if JS> it is possible, it will happen to me.. :) No, we went back out a week later and she didn't have any problem. I suspect it was ear infection but she insists "I just haven't been diving in awhile." I think it's a coin toss as to who is right. I suspect the "weak eardrum" theory untrue. Once equalized the pressure on both sides of the eardrum is equal; leaving the eardrum unaffected. Probably more of a problem with your technique of equalizing. (hint.... go slower!) I do know that you will become more accustomed to equalizing as you gain diving experience. One thing you may want to try is to practice clearing in the local pool. Most pools have a 'deep' end at around 15 foot, and if you can beat that you should have no problem with diving. JS> Thanks for the info. Not a problem. Even As you descend, water pressure increases, whereas the pressure on the inner ear remains the same. This causes the eardrum to begin "bending" and creates the uncomfortable and sometimes very painful sensation you describe. I have witnessed ruptured eardrums at 8 feet... > My question; Is this normal and if so how do people dive > to greater depths? What is being done to relieve the pressure? I > do suffer sinus problems from time to time and sometimes wonder if > this is related to that. Yes, it is normal. We teach several methods for "clearing the ears", with the most simple being to hold your nose, close your mouth, and blow. Some people can do it merely by "popping" their jaw or "yawning." A head/sinus cold, or congestion can make it so that the ears will not "equalize" and lead to several nasty conditions, ie: Ruptured Eardrum, Ruptured Sinus Cavity - It is best NOT to dive to any depth while this condition exists.
