I have been thinking about scuba diving for a while now, I had taken a snorkling class this summer and I really enjoyed it and I want to try it. But what I want to know is How expensive is it or is it expensive? I have heard from a few people that the gear you must buy is pretty expensive, so i just thought I would ask. --- SLMAIL v4.0a (#1513) * Origin: :The Brooke High BBS* 304-527-3255 (1:129/202) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CDW00018 Date: 09/25/95 From: MINDI REES Time: 11:49am \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: The plunge I am really interested in scuba diving. I think it would be a really crazy experience. I want to major in oceanography and go into the ocean in a cage with the sharks. So I thought I might as well get a head start and scuba dive. If anyone has any information on this subject. Please write. Thank you. --- SLMAIL v4.0a (#1513) * Origin: :The Brooke High BBS* 304-527-3255 (1:129/202) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CDW00019 Date: 09/25/95 From: KEITH STRAKA Time: 12:00pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: The plunge I am interested in scuba diving and some day I might even do it so if any body can give me any information on where I could learn more about it could you tell me. --- SLMAIL v4.0a (#1513) * Origin: :The Brooke High BBS* 304-527-3255 (1:129/202) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CDW00020 Date: 09/25/95 From: BRANDON FILLINGER Time: 12:02pm \/To: ANGELA BLACK (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: info put flipper, and a scuba suit, and an air tank and dive into the water. --- SLMAIL v4.0a (#1513) * Origin: :The Brooke High BBS* 304-527-3255 (1:129/202) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CDW00021 Date: 09/25/95 From: KEITH STRAKA Time: 12:04pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: the plunge I am interested in finding out if there are any local places to learn how to scuba dive. --- SLMAIL v4.0a (#1513) * Origin: :The Brooke High BBS* 304-527-3255 (1:129/202) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CDW00022 Date: 09/26/95 From: STEVE ELLIOT Time: 01:10am \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: Sea Safaris Review SEA SAFARIS DIVING & SAILING ADVENTURES Now that Fall is officially upon us, and the temperatures have started to drop, you may catch yourself daydreaming about escaping to a nice warm tropical island where you can sail through the clear blue waters of the Caribbean, stopping along the way to dive, fish, or just kick back and watch the sunset. Sounds like a pretty nice dream, doesn't it? Well the folks at Sea Safaris in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida can help turn that dream into an affordable reality. I recently had the opportunity to visit with Kirk Schanze and take a first-hand look at the Sea Safaris operation. Sea Safaris offers three charter vessels that are perfect for your Caribbean getaway plans. Two of the boats are 70 foot motor/sailing ketchs with an 18 foot beam, and the third boat is a 55 foot tri-decker diesel motor yacht outfitted for scuba divers with a 15 foot beam. All three vessels are docked in Miami, Florida. The Sea Safaris operation is based around the concept of full-service bare-boating. Simply stated, a Sea Safaris charter includes: A. Accomodations on either a sailing vessel or a motor yacht. (The boats will hold 20 people a piece, but Kirk tells me that he seldom books more than 12 at a time on the boats.) B. Experienced Captain and crew. (Kirk can provide dive instructors or you may simply choose to have an experienced Dive Master as your guide for the week.) C. Provisions include food, water, fuel, cooking & eating utensils, fully equipped galley, snorkeling gear, fishing gear, and all port charges. (You have full control of your menu for the week!) D. All bedding linens. E. Use of onboard audio/video systems. (You choose the movies and the music.) F. Full Air Conditioned comfort. G. US Coast Guard approved safety equipment. H. Vessels equipped with full instrumentation including GPS. I. All fuel charges. Bareboating is real similar to the idea of backpacking. You bring your dive gear and a limited amount of personal gear and do without the curling iron and the French-milled bath soap for a week, and in return you have a terrific time at a price that wont break your budget. Speaking of price, Sea Safaris rates start at about $450 per person for a week, and will vary according to sailing trips vs. diving trips and your choice of destination. What impressed me about Sea Safaris was the friendliness of the crews, the design of the boats, and the complete flexibity that Kirk and his staff have built into their operation. Sea Safaris will send you a booking information kit full of information about the various options you have in choosing your dive sites, menu selection, favorite movies, music, etc. and then you tailor your vacation adventure to suit the needs of your group. The afternoon I was there, Kirk and his staff were loading two boats full of college students from Georgia who were heading off to the Bahamas for a week of sailing, fishing, diving, and fun. The divers made their home on the Shark XV diesel motor yacht which has a 14 cfm air compressor on board, while the "relaxers" made their home on the Shark XIV sailing vessel. Both boats have community marine heads, fresh water showers, and complete galleys. The sleeping accomodations were semi-private single or double cabins with curtains pulled across the front of each cabin, and a non-private bunk bed area in the forward section of the Shark XIV. The plan was for the two groups to travel in tandem and tie up each night for their evening meals and partying. Sea Safaris offers week-long diving or sailing trips throughout the islands in the Bahamas chain, as well as some shorter excursions down the Florida coastline into the Keys.
