DB> Computers are only theoretical models, just like dive tables. They DB> *by no means* fail-safe. Divers can get bent within computer limits! In reviewing the manual on my SCUBAPRO DC-12, I find the computer more conservative than the dive tables. For example, DC-12 says 60' for 35 min. as is programmed. NAUI says 60' for 55 min. and NASDS says 60 for 60 as no decompression limits. I understand that the computer is not fail safe, and I have no reason to push the limits, but I will definitely dive with a puter more often than the tables. Dan Misiaszek ... TH> Not to put you "on the spot" Dan... but why do you assume TH> a diver "has to make a mistake" to get bent? There was an excellent publication put out by UNDERCURRENT called "Why divers die" and also an article in Scientific American about diving and accidents. Most do make mistakes that causes injury or death. It also seems that some people have a small heart defect that goes unnoticed until diving a depths. The defect is not a problem until you saturate your blood with nitrogen per scuba diving. It is a small hole between the right and left atriums which allows for the transfer of blood, and at depth, nitrogen saturated blood. Blood that would normally go to right ventricle and on to the lungs is transferred back into the main circulation through this hole and into the left atrium. This seems to greatly increase the risk of embolism. Several diving accidents have been attributed to this heart defect when divers were diving within the limits. The defect was discovered after the accidents. People live normal lives with this insignificant flaw until diving. I don't have the article in front of me, a buddy is borrowing it. It is well worth the read if you get ahold of it. Dan Misiaszek ... Most US cylinders are banned from use in Aust. unless the the cylinder is re-tested to Australian specifications. This entails the owner subbmitted technical specs on the cylinder including the grade and source of the Aluminium used. Aluminium cylinders used in Australia must be made from virgin alumuminium, not re-cycled. I have had quite a few cylinders that US divers moving to Aust have had shipped over with them, only to find that the hydro station won't pass them. Did they ever clean up everything from when the Blackthorn nailed the old skyway?? If so, what did they do with everything that was picked up??
