In a 8/9/95 message to All, Larry Feldman wrote: Good questions, and ones that are answered in every basic scuba class. LF> 1) How do you determine what the correct weight would be to achieve LF> that? Wearing all of your dive equipment, you should float vertically with your eyes at the surface level. Add or subtract weights to achieve this. The object is to be neutral once you're several feet down; i.e., have a specific gravity of 1.0. LF> 2) Does the weight change at different depths? No, but your *volume* does, which does the same thing: as you descend, the increasing water pressure compresses the bubbles in your wetsuit and the air in your buoyancy compensator (like an inflatable lifejacket, used to offset the wetsuit compression). This makes you tend to sink, so you add a bit more air to the BC as you descend. You bleed it off as you come back up, to remain neutral. Yes, a lot of tiddling is involved--it's part of the sport, and we live with it. Just keep in mind that the real variable is volume, and that there's an inverse relationship between internal volume and external essure. LF> 3) How do you resurface if you are using the weights or do you drop LF> them? See above. If you are "neutral," you neither sink nor float, so you just swim: it is NOT wise to rely on positive or negative buoyancy for vertical travel--in fact, it's downright dangerous! That said, dropping one's weights is accepted emergency procedure to avoid drowning, but at the risk of air embolism and/or decompression sickness. The goal is to remain neutral at all times, with some exceptions (you might want to be a little "heavy" if you're taking photos on the bottom, e.g.). Also, you can fine-tune your buoyancy by using your lung volume as an adjustment. LF> 4) Was my term "neutral bouyancy" correct? Giday, Regarding your message saying that there is no truth behind building up a tolerance is false. It is similar to getting drunk every night. Over a period of time you can take more and more alcohol having the same effect on you. Nitrogen narcosis is the same as this, you build up a tolerance and the frequency depends upon your tolerance. This was told to me by my instructor, from PADI 1 year ago and I believe that it remains true. Although it is your opinion. Mark Bernardinis * Wave Rider 1.0 [NR] * ...
