I'm just trying to figure out if we have crossed paths in the time that I was down there. I use to run around with Tom Thopson, "JR", Bob from Orbit. Just want to see if we knew each other.. Currently living in the cave diving community of Deland fl. Hope to be able to put in some good word on this echo.. I NM> got wacked for $8.00 to dive at Tobermory this weekend. GS| Are you implying that you now have to pay them $8.00 when you go in and | register? Havn't been up in Toby for a while so I am courious. Don't tell me people are bitching about having to pay a paltry $8.00 for a WHOLE dive season in Toby! At double the price it would STILL be a bargain. Esp in view of the fact that many popular/close dive sites in the T.O. area charge almost the same not per season, but per USE: Sherkston charges $8.00 per person each time, Innerkip is $5.00, Gullivers is $6.00, etc., etc. Not only is the money going towards maintaining & upgrading the best freshwater diving in the world (the Sweepstakes project is a prime example) but $1.00 of that fee goes DIRECTLY to the Hyperbaric chamber that is right in Toby at the Health Clinic. How many dive sites have this essential emergency treatment centre on hand? I dive Toby every long weekend with students. But this past weekend we were actually able to dive for pleasure, and one guess where we went. Where else can get world class dive sites that cover all levels and almost all types of diving (shore, boat, etc.)? On July 23rd over 200 divers are expected to go into the waters of this International River and spend up to two hours removing submerged trash. R We hope that American divers will take the time to come up to Canada and help with this important projectS said Derek Hill, the president of the Ontario Underwater Council. RThe St. Clair River is a popular scuba destination for people from both sides of the border. Refuse retrieved from the bottom helps both countries ... no matter from which side of the waterway the garbage is found. The Sunday afternoon eco-dive is one of the major events in the summer dive calender for people living in southern Ontario. Two large scuba clubs and the umbrella provincial council are working with the dive industry and the community to make sure that the project is both meaningful and a uccess. The eco-dive will be made close to the International Bridge that joins the city of Sarnia , Ontario and Port Huron, Michigan. There is an old train dock a short distance from the bridge where the divers plan to conduct the river bottom sweep. RWe have picked 4 or 5 large stretches of water close to the dock where divers can easily get into the water. Buddy teams who register with us will be assigned one of those areas based on their skills level,S explained Mr. Hill. RThe river can be tricky. At spots the current can be very strong. As well, there is heavy boat traffic in the main channel. We have identified areas along the river based on the degree of dive difficulty. It goes from real easy to experienced. We want to make sure that everyone who takes part in the clean-up has a safe and enjoyable experience.S Each clean-up zone will be under the control of a dive master and a team of safety divers. There will be safety boats in the water at all times and there will be shore crews to assist in the removal of all trash. RWe try to recycle as much of what we recover as possibleS said Mr. Hill. RThose items that just donUt have a use will be disposed properly at a local land fill site.S In years gone by similar clean-ups organised by the clubs and the council have brought to the surface a number of surprising finds. Along with cars, refrigerators and bottles, the Eco-divers have found sunken boats, construction equipment and clothes! All certified divers are invited to take part. Anyone wishing to dive must bring their own gear (including a BC and a C-Card). Divers must work in buddy teams -- solo divers will be paired with suitable partners. Shore crew volunteers are also in a big demand. The dive is set to begin in the early afternoon. Following the dive there will be a free barbecue and a brief awards ceremony. Prizes will be given to many of the divers who take part in the clean-up. As well, U.S. Divers / Aqua-lung will be giving away scuba gear to Eco-divers who register with them prior to the clean-up. The clubs involved in the organisation of the Divers Care Project have alerted the US/Canadian border officials of the event. American divers wanting to take part in the Canadian event will have little difficulty in crossing the border provided they have proper citizenship identification. -0- Individual Divers and Dive Clubs wishing registration information should contact the Ontario Underwater Council at 1185 Eglinton Ave. E in Toronto Ontario Canada.
