Well, glad to here from the R.P. I was stationed at Clark Air Base from 1989 to 1991, and learned to dive in Batangas (Balayan Bay). Most of my diving in the Philippines was in the Batangas area, San Fernando La Union (Wallace Air Station), or around San Miguel just down the road from Olongapo. My favorite dive spot in the Batangas area is Layag Layag Shoal. It's located just off of the northern tip of Caban Island/Maricaban Island, and east of Sombrero Island. Nice strong currents make for a good dive here. I remember hearing a story about a diver that got swept out into the Verde Island Passage, was picked up by a fishing boat, and beat his buddies back home...while they were still doing search and rescue ops. I've also heard the diving in Cebu, and Palawan is probably the best in the Philippines, but never got a chance to make it to either spot. Happy Diving... *** * CMPQwk #1.4 * UNREGISTERED EVALUATION COPY --- TriToss (tm) Professional 1.0 - (Unregistered) * Origin: Trasher's Realm Guam,USA 6:670/0 (6:670/0.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CB200006 Date: 07/01/95 From: LARRY KUIVILA Time: 11:40pm \/To: JASON SCHWARTZ (Read 2 times) Subj: Sherwood JS>I can get a Sherwood BC for around $250+... a lot less then Scuba JS>pro. Last year, here on Guam, I paid a grand total of $398.00 for my Scuba Pro Classic BC after owning a Dacor BC for 5 years. The Dacor was a good, solid BC. But the Scuba Pro, in my opinion, is substantially more durable, dependable, and trustworthy. You get what you pay for (In most cases, anyway). I witnessed a certain model US Divers BC nearly yanked completely off a diver in heavy surf because the BC was not equipped with a secondary belt over the cumberbund (he lost a fin, mask and snorkel, and almost lost his life as he struggled to get the BC back on). I strongly recommend that the BC you purchase has more than just velcro securing the BC around the waist. I also know that the common plastic tank band buckle used on many modern BC's can fracture, or snap after a period of heavy use, unlike a heavy metal buckle used on some BC tank bands including the typical Scuba Pro. True, the Scuba Pro BC's are more expensive, but under equal use they tend to outlast other brands by a long shot. Happy shopping... *** * CMPQwk #1.4 * UNREGISTERED EVALUATION COPY --- TriToss (tm) Professional 1.0 - (Unregistered) * Origin: Trasher's Realm Guam,USA 6:670/0 (6:670/0.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CB200007 Date: 06/19/95 From: CHRIS CROCKER Time: 06:58pm \/To: JASON SCHWARTZ (Read 2 times) Subj: Re: Performance Diver -> > Has anyone in here purchased dive equipment from Performance Diver -> > order)? It might have been a diver. Do you know anything about it? -> Sweir I don't know about the Niagra River, but there was a Scuba Death at the Shark River Inlet in New Jersey this weekend. Seems a student panicked while taking his certification dive. The Instructor tried to assist him. Instructor ended up getting pulled under as well. Both men eventually were pulled to shore by a jet skier. The student was pronouced dead at the local hospital, the instructor was able to be revived by his rescuers. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: (1:273/204.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CB200009 Date: 06/26/95 From: CHRIS CROCKER Time: 06:30pm \/To: ADAM CAPLAN (Read 2 times) Subj: Looking for Dive Buddy -> depths up to 102 ft. I found a shop who was actually more interested in customer -> service/satisfaction then simply making a buck. Kinda wish this shop -> one I got my training from... but it is kinda far to drive 3 times pe -> for classes. I have a shop not more than 2 minutes from my house. They run their business like a business. Concerned with the bottom line figures and daily profits. That's all well and good, but they put their dollar figure ahead of customer satisfaction. The next closest store is a good 40 minutes away. The guy that owns that shop runs it more like a mom and pop store. There have been times he's lent me his own personal gear at no charge. Many other times that he refused to charge me for weight rentals and such. He always gives the impression that he wants customer satisfaction first. Needless to say, I go to the second shop for all my purchases, air fills, rentals, etc. Members of my dive club have said the same things about the way the two shops differ in their business practices. I suggest you too continue to do your business at the store that is a little further. In the long run; it'll be more than worth it. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: (1:273/204.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CB200012 Date: 06/30/95 From: LANNY CHAMBERS Time: 09:02am \/To: DIANE BOETTCHER (Read 2 times) Subj: RE: FORCE FINS In a 6/28/95 message to Josh Gilmore, Diane Boettcher wrote: JG> ...he always gets a kick out of seeing new divers in there multi colored JG> equipment, for once they start diving see there colors after 30 feet JG> underwater anyway. CA> Can you please expand on this statement. As far as I know or CA> understand one who is covered by water, inside of a hole, without air, CA> is in big do do!!! The explanation is only to the first part of the equation. It reads "when something goes wrong = no air = no options". That is not always true. a lot of things can go wrong, and you can have a lot of options. I got stuck in a coral cavern under French (or was it Molassas) reef in Pennekanp Park. Something went wrong. I had options. I didn't run out of air. I am here to write about it. However if you put the last part of the equation first and modify the rest of the equation, is is much more true. "No air & when something goes wrong = limited options = probably dead". In diving as well as in other parts of real life, there are very few absolutes. Heck. If you remember Sea Hunt, Mike Nelson had the "something goes wrong - no air - no options" senario many times. He always survived! :-) ...
