The tide went south around the tip of Pinellas County up the intercoastal, north, back out to the gulf through Clearwater and then once again. This may not be an official report, but by the fish kill that seems to be what happened. Didn't seem to put as many fish on the beach this time but, that could have been the winds. * OLX 2.1 TD * 1:324/127) --- GOMail v1.2 [92-0553] * Origin: Icepics Freezer BBS - St Pete, Fla (813) 526-0354 (1:3603/530) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CAU00002 Date: 06/23/95 From: STAN DEAN Time: 01:32pm \/To: CHARLIE GIPSON (Read 3 times) Subj: Move to Florida? The man's name who started NASE was John Spence. I know this because I originally certified Mr. John Spence as a Basic PADI diver back in 1978 or 1979. Mr. Spence went to PADI's International Instructor's College in Santa Ana, California and about 6 weeks later, came out as a PADI Instructor. Mr. Spence opened The Aquanaut dive shop on University Avenue in Lubbock across the street from Texas Tech University and began to herd people through his courses and selling SCUBA Pro equipment. There were hundreds of weekend wonders who went through John's courses. One weekend at Del Rio, Texas at Lake Amistad...No text book, and two open water dives under their belt and a C-Card in their hand. PADI's Quality Assurance finally caught up with ol'e John and he was booted out of PADI. He tried to get under NAUI, but after a short visit in John's shop, the NAUI rep decided to leave it to him. Since Mr. Spence had no certification agency and no business anymore, he decided to make his own C-Cards and keep going with his shoddy teaching methods. He later sold the rights to the NASE trade name to someone else. The last I'd heard, the new owners of NASE were trying to run a legitimate operation. As far as recognition...I think NASE is now accepted in most places around the world. I can't vouch for this tho' and know nothing of their status and teaching methods anymore.
