Regardless of how much air you carry, you shouldn't go below 130 feet without mixed gas or deep dive training. The 1984 U.S. Navy Standard Air Decompression Table states that at 130 feet, you can have 10 minutes bottom time without needing a decompression stop (assuming a 60 foot/min. ascent rate), or up to 25 minutes bottom time with a 10 foot stop of 10 minutes. This applies to the first dive only, and is probably a longer dive than you can make on one tank at this depth. You have a greater likelihood of exceeding the no decompression limits at depths of 60 to 80 feet, where your air lasts longer, or on multiple dives. Also, the Navy tables are designed for a military diver in top physical condition and leave no margin for safety. --- SLMR 2.1a [\] It doesn't matter which dive tables you DON'T use.[\] --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: LONGBOW BBS Tampa, FL (1:377/77.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CAN00018 Date: 06/19/95 From: LARRY KUIVILA Time: 05:54pm \/To: LANNY CHAMBERS (Read 4 times) Subj: Barracuda LC>My memory is hazy on this, Bruce, but I seem to recall that only LC>barracuda in the northern Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico are affected. LC> LC>--- MacWoof 1.5.3 . . . and holding LC> * Origin: St. Louis, USA - email: creative@inlink.com (1:100/514.2) Ciguatera toxin is produced by a small dinoflagellate, "Gambierdiscus toxicus", that colonizes the bare surfaces of rock, piers, shipwrecks, or even blades of algae. It is eaten along with filamentous algae by herbivorous fishes which are in turn eaten by predatory fishes. Since the toxin is not metabolized, it accumulates in the flesh and particularly the liver and reproductive organs. Each time a predator eats a smaller fish, it accumulates its victims lifetime supply of ciguatera. Consequently, the highest concentrations occur in large predatory fishes. Fatal cases have been reported in the west Indies where barracuda is banned from sale. Here on Guam, non-fatal cases have been reported from barracuda, where it is a commercially important troll- caught species. Large individuals should be treated with caution! I first heard about about new units from a local shop who expected to have rebreathers in rental and a training class in place by January 85.... no word since then. Then, to make matters more confusing, there are several companies which have rebreathers in pre-production, but each has decided on a cost around 15K... to cover any liability accrued in stupid use by users (or visa versa). A local instructor tells me the *user* class for one of these is available but costs two grand and require the student travel to the factory for training. So much for cheap or easy. So, all I know is that there is a lot of speculation about rebreathers, at least two companies have pre-production RD efforts going and one has setup preliminary user training. This means we *gotta* see the units real soon.....(again). I agree a closed circuit system otta be the otters' meow for UW photography.... but then I also thought *really* great photographers could hold their breath 'till the dives over.....
