--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 186 SCUBA Ref: CAK00026 Date: 06/13/95 From: CHERYL APPLEBAUM Time: 01:22pm \/To: ALL (Read 4 times) Subj: PADI ANNOUNCES NITROX PRO Something I just picked up from the rec.scuba conf: > PADI states: > "Following increasing requests from PADI members internationally, > PADI will introduce an enriched air diver program later this year. > This program, currently in development, will be fully-supported > with student and instructor materials". > Additional details will follow in the 4th Quarter "Undersea Journal". To clarify this: We checked with PADI Canada today, and they indicated that Nitrox WILL be offered by PADI, but ONLY as a specialty course, like Deep or Cavern diving. It will NOT be a regular part of the PADI curriculum. Like Cavern Diving, it will be a specialty that will be geared as an INTRODUCTION to that aspect of diving, NOT a full technical course. To further use the Cavern Diving analogy: Cavern Diving is defined as any dive conducted within the light zone of a cave. (The light zone is defined as that part of the cave from which natural light illuminating the entrance is visible at all times.) Cave Diving is any dive conducted beyond the light zone of a cave. Thus, the Cavern Diving specialty, while obviously a part of Cave Diving, is certainly not designed to be a full Cave Diving course. Furthermore, as PADI doesn't teach Cave Diving, any Instructor who wishes to teach this specialty must hold a Cave Diving Instructor rating from an agency that teaches & certifies this specialty. Similarly, any Instructor who wishes to teach the Nitrox specialty will need an Instructor's rating from a Nitrox specialty agency (like IANTD). Hope that clarifies things. Man, I *hate* it when the Cdn Instructors are the last to know. I dove Jervis Nov '94, we did North Bowen island and the nursery on the Saturday, Point Perpendicular and inner north head wall (The Docks), on the Sunday. I must admit the Sunday dive was fantastic, expecially The Docks, there is a long gap which extends about 30m into the cliff, and when you come out there is a 2m wide ledge that follows the wall around the left to a corner. If you swim right over the ledge and about 1m above it, all you can see is the ledge, but swim to the right into clear water which drops away 20m and the effect is breathtaking. It was like flying off a cliff, it was a fantastic feeling that i will never forget. :) Alan --- Xenolink 1.95, XQwk 1.4 [REG 10062] * Origin: Archer BBS +61-2-371-0347 Home of ArcherNet (3:712/392)
