It blows his mind, as no > +European country allows private ownership of handguns, > +period. > > Ask him about the crime there... We actually did discuss that a bit. Not crime per se, but gun deaths. I pointed out that there is a vast cultural difference that means much more then simple availabilty of firearms. In fact, if you look at the Swiss, where posession of firearms is mandated, and look at their low firearm death rate, it becomes obvious that it's not quite that simple. I ran into an old American Rifleman last night (probably 10 years old) that had an article by a fella on this very subject. He brushed over the differences between us and European countries and concentrated on cities in California. There are many sizable cities in CA where the firearm death rate is HALF of that in England, yet firearms are readily available in CA. There were many more details involved, and he didn't attempt to draw any real conclusions other than to prove once again that gun laws aren't the answer to gun deaths. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Telnet toltbbs.com or call 313-854-6001, Boardwatch #55 (1:234/2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 185 RIGHT/BEAR ARMS Ref: EEV00001Date: 10/25/97 From: JIM DUNMYER Time: 05:43pm \/To: TOM ENRIGHT (Read 1 times) Subj: MEDIA BLACKOUT > is, for the most part, on the NRAs' side to begin with. And I remember one from years ago that the NRA had posted (my memory might be weak, but here goes): NRA: Shooting for a Million (with a big ol' target on it). The 'million' was 'number of Members'. I think the NRA is well over 2 million strong at present, and was about 3 million before the unfortunate timing of the "Jackbooted Thugs" comment hitting right at the time that Tim McVeigh decided to do his thing. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Telnet toltbbs.com or call 313-854-6001, Boardwatch #55 (1:234/2) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 185 RIGHT/BEAR ARMS Ref: EEV00002Date: 10/25/97 From: SCOTT SCHEIBE Time: 08:24pm \/To: ALL (Read 1 times) Subj: NRA General RKBA Digest 307 *********** NOTICE: THIS IS A FORWARDED MESSAGE *********** ============================================================================ GENERAL-RKBA Digest 307 Topics covered in this issue include: 1) FAXALERT: The Bigger Clinton Gun Ban by NRA Alerts
