I've been on-line for over 10 years with a fairly large system, and with all I've got to offer, the modeming plblic today REFUSE to subscribe for any thing since there are soo many "other free systems" out there for the calling. It just ain't worth the effort to attempt to even regroup "expenses" let alone make a "profit" with a BBS. Live and Learn! I carry over 150 FIDO and other net Echo's and made the "Stupid mistake" of letting low level callers have access to the .QWK off line reader/replier package and to my dismay one of my users did a "bombing run" of that Dave Rhodes SCAM letter into every echo that was available to him, I found out about it after it had gone out and I started to get "Nasty-Grams" from ALL of the Modeators of the effected echo's, to make a long story short, the off line reader is no longer available to any one [ due to this one stupid kid! ] and after sending out over 100 NetMail messages to the Moderators I kept my fone bill for all the calls and took the kid and his parents to Small Claims Court to get back MY expenses of what he cost me, the Judge [ and I thank the Lady dearly ] awarded me my expenses plus court costs and other damages [ think I got $100 above my actual expenses from that one ] and consequently the kid hasn't been on ANY other systems since unless he's using another name! Ya gotta be carefull today if you want to PYA [ protect yer a** ], too bad its coming to that today! *TOM* --- Maximus 2.02 * Origin: Shuttle Wyld Stallyns (1:141/850) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 184 HOME OFFICE Ref: D5W00008 Date: 05/26/96 From: TOM CULLEN Time: 04:48pm \/To: SCOTT WATSON (Read 8 times) Subj: Telephone! HOME OFFICE ECHO RULES A note to SysOps and Members about this echo, the HOME_OFFICE. THE HOME_OFFICE ECHO is an open, on-going *Public* forum for the exchange of ideas, questions and opinions regarding facets of home based or cottage business. 1. All messages should relate to the topic of the home office and its various offshoots; office equipment, coffee, relaxation, exercise, etc. Off-topic threads will occur but PLEASE(!) keep them to a minimum. Threads discussing topics covered by other ECHOS should be moved there. 2. Messages posted in this echo are the property of the message author. Please request and obtain their written permission prior to publishing them. 3. As experienced, knowledgeable and helpful as the members of the HOME_OFFICE ECHO are, any and all information is *personal opinion* only and not to be taken as any type of legal, financial (including accounting) or medical advice. Acting on any information obtained is at your own risk. It is suggested that you obtain proper legal, medical and/or financial counsel prior to acting. 4. All Users are to maintain a FRIENDLY attitude to all other Users in the way that they enter and respond to messages. Take those "flames" and burn them elsewhere. PLEASE! 5. Since this is a business and professional echo, please refrain from using an alias, save those for the other echos that allow them. For those who are noting this for the first time CROSBY!, the founder of and ex- moderator of HOME_OFFICE, uses his real name, *not* an alias, honest! 6. Since networking is encouraged, DO feel free to share your business interests, questions and thoughts. Ask for or offer help, advice or opinion - but remember to keep all topics germain to business. AND PLEASE, NO DIRECT ADVERTISING OR SOLICITATION OF YOUR BUSINESS. If an opportunity arises to allow for an exchange of business between you and another parti- cipant, that's great! But, please, TAKE YOUR PRIVATE BUSINESS OUTSIDE THIS PUBLIC ECHO. 7. The use of Internet or Usenet style multi-line sigs is prohibited. Also, excessive tag or origin lines are discouraged. The sysop's, who carry this echo on their systems, pay to move the mail around and do not need the extra baggage. 8. No religious or political discussions, taglines or signoff sentiments here. Please! There are other echos better suited for that. 9. The HOME_OFFICE ECHO prohibits the dissemination, advertisement, solicitation, endorsement, discussion or debate of "chain-letter" business, MLM, or other income opportunities. Please take such topics to more appropriate echos. 10. Remember that this is a PUBLIC forum. Please refrain from posting private messages. Please conduct your private business by phone, US mail or FIDONET's Private Netmail. (Ask your SYSOP for more information, if you are a dial-up user.) 11. Attire is to be sweats, underwear or nothing at all. Afterall, that's one of the advantages of a HOME OFFICE, isn't it? Business suits will be allowed if you promise that you are on the way to see your banker. :) 12. If you feel the urge to be negative and cynical PLEASE(!) take it elsewhere. AND, Please refrain from posting consumer or service complaints or perpetuating such threads with your personal experiences. (If you recommend against a product for a legitimate reason by all means say so. But, do not regale us with your bad service complaints!) 13. Access to this conference is limited to systems with valid Fidonet nodelist addresses. If you are a sysop and you are not a member of Fidonet, the conference is to be flagged as read-only. 14. Moderation duties are shared by Rick Samuels and Sue Matthews. Please do not send complaints about rules violations through the echo. If you have complaints with another participant in the echo, please send netmail directly to the person responsible, with a cc to the moderators. Complaints about moderation, the actions of other participants, etc. are considered OFF TOPIC in the echo. If you think the moderators are slacking off, and want to offer your wisdom, please do it via netmail rather than posting in the echo. 15. Most importantly, enjoy yourself and be open to share information so we can all learn and prosper. ENJOY!!! Thank you for joining us in the Home Office. It is a software driven RG> Fax, Copy machine, Telephone, Modem (I think) desktop device all in one RG> unit. I want to call it `Multi Pass' or Pass. RG> It was advertised on tv for a while about 6-9 months ago. Flipping thru the Elek-Tek catalog (800-395-1000)... it's a Canon MultiPASS 1000 (it scans! faxes! copies! slices! dices! it has a "melody" on hold!). No data modem, though. $800. HP makes several (no telephone), the OfficeJet ($479) and OfficeJet 350 ($599, the scanner can be used with your computer). Brother makes two, MFC 1950 ($499, with telephone, voice mailboxes) and MFC 4500 ($999, same but with laser printer). Lumina makes two copier/fax/scanner/modems (the "copier" reduces & enlarges!), no telephone, works with your existing printer, $399 (14.4) and $499 (28.8)). Most of these are inkjets, so "copier" is pushing it a bit. Consider, though, whether when your fax goes into the shop to be fixed, you want to lose your telephone, scanner, copy machine, printer, and modem at the same time. You're really putting all your eggs into one basket with these things. I personally believe that separate devices are more reliable, easier to maintain, more flexible, let you upgrade easier, and are cheaper in the long run. -Dave --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: WizInfo CBCS Minneapolis 612.721.8859 (1:282/2022) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 184 HOME OFFICE Ref: D5WH1782 Date: 05/24/96 From: OLIVER KNEIP Time: 01:46pm \/To: KENO SHENONO (Read 7 times) Subj: HOME BASED BUSINESS > booklet, it's up to you.
