Glad to see all is harmonious with you two. As it should be this time of year, when most are thinking good things about everyone, exchanging gifts and renewing relationships. friendships and those we share life with on a day to day basis. Let me take this opportunity to thank all of you that particapate in this echo, despite the failings of store and forward mail (which has me posting this message on another BBS to get it out in real time), we have one heck of a great bunch of people in here, still. I have just started running into some of the folks that used to be here but for some reason can't get here any longer and now are strong Internet USENET echo followers that have said hello to me and to all of you. For 1997, I'm hoping to getting this echo available through the Fidonet backbone and ported to a USENET group, so that perhaps we can stay in touch even if we can't all see messages on a Fido BBS, and so that those that have met similar fates as David Light and others can still talk to the "bunch of regulars" that have been with us all of this time. In the meantime, I want to thank all of you for making this echo one of the friendlest and informative echos/conferences/newsgroups on this or any other network. It's the people that contribute their knowledge, expertise, and musical abilities that make this echo such a joy to moderate (mostly with no moderaton needed), and contiunally on topic/focus and almost always everything said is credible and facts that you can trust. A rarity on most networks. Hell-o. I read your message to this other individual about cables, hard disk recording, analog machines and such and I would like to know some things: 1) I have built a workable, yet far from perfect, digital computerized recording studio in my home. I have one sound card with L and R stereo RCA ins and outs running two channels each respectively from a Mackie 16 channel mixer. From there it all goes into my archaic but still workable Crown IC 50 pre-amp, Yamaha P-2200 power amp to my AR 3a (11a guts) speakers. When ixing to my quite-average TEAC (made in China or something) cassette deck, there is some hiss from the system itself. One would be somewhat hardpressed to make an issue of it however. 2) But the cables are old speaker wire. One must wrap an exposed end around the speaker's poles for the + and -. I did, however, cut the wires to exact lengths for each speaker connection. 3) Question is, are my wires with this equipment gonna really make any difference at this point? I've had this stuff for about 20 years maximumly (bought the Crown in 1974 and have all the original papers) along with the speakers and the Yamaha in the late 70's as I recall when I was but a mere youth. Given the ease of sending messages to a large number of usenet newsgroups, I don't know if this will have the optimal signal to noise ratio... I see a backlash happening - people still using the Internet for e-mail and mailing lists but rejoining the other nets for general moderated conversation. For those that have been following the threads of these conversations over the past few years, and to the growing ones who are becoming alienated from their local BBSs that may be dropping services or Fidnet coverage. Nearly three months have gone by with almost constant problems either recieving or getting messages to the conference here. I'm looking at a number of options, but most of them are largely based on Internet access with a realization that sooner or later Fidonet is dead or absorbed into the Internet. Does anyone know if the Fidonet echos are ported to USENET style newsgroups currently somewhere on the Internet? This would be the easiest Fido/Internet Gateway for us to keep going while still preserving the Fidonet coverage for as long as is needed. Another option is moving entireky to an Internet newsgroup, another is to use a maillist approach. I'm opening the floor to discussion on this important issue. I've been the caretaker around these parts for some time now, and really would like to hear your views on this important topic. Please post all posts under ECHO FUTURE as a topic for all traffic on this. We can do so much more neat things on the Internet than in this format, and make available some of the goodies by file request to those continuing on via Fidonet. A web page is also under consideration that is echo related. Where would you like to see your echo go? All ideas welcome. Either post here in the echo if of interest to all, or send to me privately at bgoodwin@pacbell.net. Thank you all! This is stretching the topic a bit far, but has anyone stumbled on a voice-stress analysis program for the PC? It seems that a run-of-the-mill sound card would have enough resolution for the job. I would not believe that the "hum" in your system is being caused by the type or gauge of wire nor termination. With that said, I believe I would still go ahead and replace the "bare wire speaker connectors" with a good quality spade lug or 5 Way post. This change is very inexpensive and simple to execute with a minimum of time and tools. Were I to get the bug and change speaker cables I wouldn't go to anything more exotic than something like the Tara Labs Klara cable at $.79 (US) per ft. I have an old Dynaco Amp that I just love. It is far from the best amp available, and even was a mid priced amp back in the 70s when it came into being. But it has a wonderful warm sound and it sits and plays in a place of honor in my office, where I listen to it for hours on end. When I first acquired the amp I was like a little kid at Xmas and almost had the lid off before I got it in the house. I was horrified to see the wiring and quality of wire used in its' manufacture. Yet it sounds great. What would I gain by putting really primium grade cables on the outside when the inside looks like a Radio Shack odds and ends sale? Probably nothing. I ended up using Monster Interlink 200 balanced patch cords and original issue Monster Cable speaker wires, and doubt anything else would sound better. What is outside will not improve what is inside. My main system is a different story. I heard a difference that I liked between the Monsters and the Tara Labs that I finally selected. But my individual pieces of equipment and speakers all have excellent wiring, terminations and binding posts. So cable upgrading seemed more logical. Cables and terminations are a very hot topic among engineers and some of our "golden earred brethren". I have spent many hours reading both sides of the subject. And as a result I am more confused than when I started. I just go with my ears and to hell with everyone else. Guess that isn't really much help, but if you get tired of that "vintage" equipment, give me a shout.
