That certainly is the way pmost inept engineers cover a slo ppy job of micing and laying down tracks in a session, Never does quite get fixed in the mix if it wasn't done right in the first place! I've heard Label The CD is a mixture of digital & optic technologies. If you were to look at a disk EDGE on, with label up, here is what you see: (this is DEFINITLY not to scale!) :-) ______ label printing ______ laquer coating (VERY SOFT!) ^^^^^^ THIN coating of aluminum on top (next) layer of molded pits. ^^^^^^ Pit track molded into to top of polycarbonate wafer ______ bottom (polished) of thick polycarbonite wafer (very hard!) The laser shines up (at a slight angle) and reflects off the aluminum vapour coated TOP of the molded pit track of the polycarbonite wafer. The laquar is thin compared to the bottom and is VERY EASILY DAMAGED. Even a fingernail through the label is death to the pit track. The reason for the thick polycarbonate wafer is that scratches that happen on it are out of focus with the pit track. However, if the label is dented, that dent can easily travel through to the pit layer and damage it directly, after which little hope of repair remains. You can look through many cd's that have a think aluminum coating. Just choose a bright light source and one with little label printing. :-) You'll also notice the odd pinhole as well where the aluminum didn't take. These are usually small and don't account for severe errors. AHHHH!! > How many others here besides me pick up a great amp, plug it in, only to > get a very distinct HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM comming through the ground > wires??? If you are inquiring about home audio I was able to eliminate ALL the little electrical Gremlins in my home by running four new dedicated high capacity lines directly from the breaker box to the wall behind my system. I ran each line in its' own conduit and grounded each one all the way back to the box. I used "hospital grade" fixtures (orange plugs) that only cost a few dollars more each, through the local hardware store (5 or 6 times as much through an audiophile catalog for the same thing). A few months later I further isolated these lines by installing a second breaker box and moving the audio lines as well as the new lines I installed for my computer gear. It made all the difference in the world! No more problems when the frig kicked in or the central air turned on etc! I can run a drill in the kitchen and never see a bit of interference on the A/V gear, where before it would bring about a loud long hisssss. I believe the whole project cost about $250. As prices go these days, that is an inexpensive tweak, and has bought me a lot of peace of mind! Hello Will! Sunday May 12 1996 15:08, Will Thompson wrote to All: WT> On what side of a CD is the music -actually- on? Well, A CD is made like this: 'molten' plastic is poured onto the so called 'stamper', one side remains flat, one gets tiny holes in it like this: __ _ _ _ __ _ __ _ _ |__|_|_|__|_|__|_|__|__|_|_|____|__|_|_|_|_| the top is gonna be the label side | | |__________________________________________| the bottom is the erhm, well, bottom side, realy then aluminum is poured on the top side, filling up the holes and leaving a film on top of the whole thing, this ofcourse is done so that it will efelct. over that there comes a protective layer and then the print. so the CD is read from the bottom side only, there's nothing on the top side that a simple CD player can read. but to the question about what side it's on: you can see in the drawing that the actual holes which are the data ar closer to the top than the bottom (in fact, they're only a few micron away from the top layer of paint, while they are .9 milimeter from the bottom side), but like I said it's read from what we like to call the bottom. if you make a scratch on the bottom side, you can often pollish it and the cd will work perfectly again, a serious scratch on the label side will destroy the aluminum layer, so it doesn't reflect the laser light anymore) and make the cd worthless.
