--------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, if that to you is "extremely narrow" then maybe your definition of "extremely narrow" is itself extremely narrow. As for "focused" I plead "guilty guilty guilty" and take it as a compliment. Focused is precisely what a Fido echo is supposed to be. The band Focus is also on-topic. GE> If they succeed (and I'm sure that they will) and the narrow GE> defintion of what is and is not on topic is enforced, the GE> number of new participants in here will diminsh to nothing, GE> and with a limited amount of message traffic, the GE> participants will eventually move over to Usenet, and this GE> will become yet another dead Fido echo. Well, maybe so maybe not. That's the risk we take, though in general we gain more refugees from a.m.p./r.m.p than the other way around. My general impression is that we are a bit more tolerant and easygoing than our Usenet counterparts, but folks might want to check that out for themselves. They certainly welcome interminable tyhreads on the meaning of progrock, whereas we tend to get bored with that question here after a couple of weeks. Hope this clears up a few things, though except for the official ruling above on what is on-topic here this is not a a message from the moderator but just from another echo participant. KN> for the purposes of this echo "PROG" is not an adjective KN> but a category GE> I see. In that case, so long, & thanks for all the fish. Well, no one is asking you to leave and you are certainly more than welcome to stay if you want to talk about prog. Your point about prog music vs prog artists is well taken. Traditionally on the echo people can talk about any group or artist who has been in the past identified as a progrocker. Thus people can talk about virtually any old stuff released by Genesis, Ambrosia, Kansas, Rush, Saga, FM, Peter Gabriel, and countless others even though it might have been 20 years since they did anything proggy. Whereas yes, there are artists who have not been identified as progrockers who have done the odd proggy bit here and there. Hey, I even have a Commander Cody album with a prog tune on it. In cases such as these, discussions of the bands/artists are limited only to those tunes they have done which can be considered progrock tunes. So, Genesis "I Missed Again" is on topic while Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" is not. The thread of "prog in unsuspected places" ie progrock tunes by non-progrockers is always on topic and even encouraged. Cheers, Kenneth --- * OFFLINE 1.58 * Help! I believe the conversation was listin SS>bands with musical talent, aargo ELP, Gentle Giant, and King Crimson do ot SS>apply. Duh, Steve, _you're_ confused; you must have taken a wrong turn in Fido-land somewhere. This echo is the 60's 70's Progressive Rock echo. This echo is expressedly FOR discussion of bands from the 60's 70's Prog-Rock movement, of whom ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant, and King Crimson were at the forefront, whatever you think of them musically, and the Beatles and Doors broke up by the end of the 70's; they were part of the previous era of Rockdom. If you don't think Yes, KC, ELP, & GG have any musical talent, then you're wasting your time posting in the wrong echo. May I suggest the General Music Echo to you? Your tastes should be more suited there. Also, there are spearate echoes devoted solely to The Beatles and Pink Floyd that are quite good. However Floyd, by general consenses here, is considered prog-rock (but not by me personally; I like them though). Although we DO discuss the Beatles and The Doors here, but only as a precursive influence to the Prog-Rock movement that followed. I like both those bands, but they are from a different era and style than what is strictly covered in this echo. The Beatles were innovative, tasteful, highly influential, but just so-so to poor musicians. The Doors were somewhat less of these, but perhaps better musically, although Krieger would never be considered a great guitarist. He did play stuff that fit, though. Now if you consider the raw keyboard talent of say Keith Emerson, neither Floyd's Wright, The Doors' Manzerick, or John Lennon or Paul McCartney could play anything close to say, Emerson's Fugue from Trilogy. Similar comparisons can be made regarding the musicianship of the members of King Crimson & Gentle Giant. I need type no further. Bashing Yes, KC, ELP, & GG will get you no where in this echo. Unless, of course, this echo dies soon, a distinct possibility, I'd say, judging from the sheer volume of off-topic posts.
