BD> Trivia question: Cold is Being is one of my favorite songs. BD> What classical song is it's theme taken from? I assume you already know, but it's adapted from the Adagio in G minor by Tomasso Albinoni. FWIW, the original score to Albinoni's Adagio may not exist. The piece we know today was arranged by a fellow named, Remo Giazotto. He apparently developed it from a fragment which was discovered in Dresden, Germay after one of the Allied bombings of that city in World War II. There are other sections on that Renaissance album which are obviously borrowed from the classical repertoire. Since you seem to be so well versed in this sort of thing , here's a trivia question for *you*: "Running Hard", one of my faves from _Turn of the Cards_ begins with a lengthy piano introduction which is also taken from a classical piece originally written for the organ. I listen to the radio a lot nowadays and it has come to my attention that a lot of what is coming out lately is crap. Not crap because it isn't good music, but crap because they call it rock 'n roll but it really isn't. New *Rock* 102.1 (Milwaukee area) is called "New Rock" but they devote themselves to Alternative music. Even Lazer 103 has begun to play more and more music which does not fit in the Rock spectrum. We need to look into the past to find an answer... Back in the sixties and seventies a new form of music called "Rock 'N Roll" emerged. With founders such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, and many others, it is obvious why it was not accepted very quickly. These bands were producing music never heard before. Over time these bands obtained a devoted following which then pushed Rock into the mainstream. Bands like Rush, Yes, Supertramp, and others began to be heard. Throughout the seventies these bands were on the top, but soon they were to fall. The early eighties were tough on these seventies bands. "Soft rock" began to become popular and true rock and metal bands were left in the cold. Rap also became more mainstreamed at this time which also hurt. After several years of this decline, the nineties rolled around and some rockers tried to make a come back. Yes released "Talk" in 1994, Rush released "Chronicles", and Metalicca released the "Black" album and more recently "Load." This revival of some real rock bands was a good attempt, but in the end it has failed. Bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam are considered Rock nowadays, but in reality they are an offshoot, an "Alternative", to rock and roll. Rock has become more mellow, it doesn't have the bite it used to. Metallica's "Load" is a prime example of this. While some of the songs are still pretty heavy, they lack the quality of Rock 'N Roll that "Master of Puppets" and "Ride the Lightning" had. What will the future bring? This question is quite frightening, in reality. With country music and rap becoming more and more popular, Rock my be pushed even further out of mainstream listening. It is truly a dying breed. ****************** ***True Rockers*** ****************** Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Yes, Rush, Aerosmith, Supertramp, Metallica, AC/DC, Kiss, (early)Guns 'N Roses, and tons more who are losing face in the nineties. As far as I'm concerned, Trevor Rabin is a fine musician worthy of being in Yes. Had it not been for him, Yes probably would have ceased to exist after 1980. In '91 Canadien TV aired a live Yes show from the Onion tour which I have a copy of and it's incredible. You should see how Rabin and Howe compliment each other, especially on "Changes" and "And You nd I". I know a lot of people couldn't care less about Rabin, but I think he did a fine job and contributed some great music. After all he wasn't supposed to be in Yes, he was supposed to be in Cinema. He is in the process of looking for another board. In the meantime, I'm going to be running the echo solo. This means I'll be making a much more active attempt to actually catch everything (sometimes I've been leaving it to Mike), and checking in more often than I have. While I'm at it, lemme dig up those rules I haven't posted in years... - Scott RULES OF THE FIDONET 60S_70S_PROGROCK ECHO RULE ONE: TOPIC This echo is for the discussion of Progressive Rock, a style of music that was created in the late 60's, reached its peak of popularity in the early 70's, and continues to be made to this day. There are literally thousands of bands which are part of this style, so a complete list is not feasible, but following is a brief list that should give you an idea of what we're talking about: early Genesis, Jethro Tull, Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM), Yes, ELP, Marillion, Gentle Giant, Mike Oldfield, King Crimson. Related topics that are allowed include Jazz and Classical music, especially their relation to Progressive Rock. That's pretty much it. Things that specfically are *not* allowed are: Alternative music, Classic Rock (unless the band also fits into the Progressive Rock category), Heavy Metal, and Top 40. This is not a challenge to the quality of any of these styles of music, just a simple statement that they aren't the focus of this echo. You wouldn't go talking about the Dalai Lama in the HOLY_BIBLE echo; don't go talking about Pearl Jam here. Please note that the official name of this echo is 60S_70S_PROGROCK. The emphasis is on Progressive Rock, not the two decades mentioned. We have no way of controlling what individiual sysops call this echo on their own boards, and often the names they pick are misleading, such as "60's and 70's Rock", "60's and 70's Music", or even "Classic Rock Disucssion". If your sysop has misnamed this echo, please ask him to name it "Progressive Rock" or use the official name. RULE TWO: FLAMING Don't flame anyone who doesn't deserve it. And as a general rule, no one deserves it. Just because somone starts flaming you or someone else does *not* mean it's okay to flame them; in a battle of words, self-defense is not a valid excuse. The moderators can and will take care of problem users. This is not to say that disagreement is not allowed. Let's just be civil about the matter. Remember, the person you are talking to has ideas just as valid as you do. RULE THREE: PROFANITY We're not picky. If your profanities are so frequent and strong that we notice them more than we notice what you're trying to say, we're going to tell you, and that means it's time for you to start drinking decaf and knock it off with the swearing. RULE FOUR: ILLEGAL ACTIVITY The use of this echo to facilitate or encourage illegal activity is strongly prohibited. Therefore, the following activities are specifically disallowed: Arranging tape trades (CD trades and trades of pre-recorded tapes is acceptable), sale or trade of bootlegs, and discussion of available bootlegs (including whether a certain song, show, or tour is available as a bootleg). Now, we realize that some of these things frequently happen in other echoes and on the Internet; we don't really care. If it's illegal, it's illegal, and we will have no part of it. RULE FIVE: ADVERTISING Commercial advertising is prohibited. Private advertising (i.e., posting a small handful of items you have for sale) is allowed as long as it's an occasional thing and adheres to all other rules (especially topic and legality). Requests for recommendations are always allowed; that's what we're here for. RULE SIX: MODERATORS The echo has two moderators so that the risk of offending posts not being seen by the moderator is minimized. Please leave all moderator-like matters to the moderators. This includes handling off-topic or otherwise illegal posts, decisions on whether or not a specific band is off topic, and a few other little things that I can't think of right now. RULE SEVEN: DISAGREEMENT WITH AND DISOBEYAL OF THE MODERATORS You are certainly free to disagree with the moderators, and if you feel you were wrongly told to stop something, you are free to plead your case. What you are *not* free to do, however, is continue to do whatever it is the moderators told you to stop doing. If the moderators decide you are right, they will say so. Until then, abide by their decisions. Disobeying the moderators is a rule violation unto itself, meaning that if you've been told to stop already and you keep doing it, then you've just broken two different rules in one message and picked up Strikes Two and Three (see below). Please note that both moderators are also active users, not to mention egotistical SOBs. The only time you are required to pay them any more mind than you would any other user is when one of them signs off as moderator or otherwise makes clear that he is speaking as a moderator. ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURE 1) The echo has two moderators. Either of them is empowered to tell you you have broken a rule. It only takes one moderator saying something is against the rules for it to be against the rules. The moderators are in frequent contact and discuss disagreements, but for the record you should be aware that if one moderator says something isn't allowed and the other says it is, then it isn't allowed, and the second moderator *will* back the first one on this even though he disagrees. 2) We work on the three strikes rule -- i.e., after three offenses you get kicked out the echo until you convince us that if we let you back, you'll follow the rules. If you come back and start trouble again, then we will kick you out for good. ... This is your puck --> . I recently purchased the album you are referring to on a U.S. released CD and after 26 years, I had a new-to-me Gentle Giant album in my hand(ears). Incredible! True, it's their freshman effort, perhaps a little niave, and is only maybe 38 minutes long, but just to have some untainted GG I had never heard before was fantastic. This album predates ELP, and most of Yes' landmark efforts. I don't know about the collectability issue, I doubt it's rare, as I've seen "Three Friends" in many a cut-out bin. But the GG self-titled first album was never released in the U.S., so the vinyl may be somewhat rare from that stanpoint. But who cares?
