I think programming in Delphi is a lot AR> more fun than VB - AR> for some reason Pascal entertains me more than Basic. i never tried basic. in the old days i was a fortran programmer. then i got fascinated with dbase and clipper and pascal. but one day i happened upon VB (the original). i was having such a good time with it that i didn't notice it was basic. heehee. i tried Delphi up to version 2. it was ok. it was easy and powerful since i had a background in paradox and pascal there was like almost no learning curve. But it is not well supported, and as an enterprise tool I prefer VB or PowerBuilder. really though, i am going to end this thread because language comparison is so totally off topic and will always end in a non-productive fashion. --- eileen@technologist.com * Origin: We Gladly Feast On Those Who Would Subdue Us (1:326/431) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 178 VISUAL BASIC Ref: F3M00009 Date: 03/16/98 From: EILEEN LOUISE Time: 08:49am \/To: CEES DIDDEN (Read 4 times) Subj: Wait for any event in loop Hi Cees, Quoting Cees Didden to Eileen Louise on Friday March 13 1998 CD> Thank you very much. Your BC>> programming then would focus on how to handle each and every BC>> event that you want to allow for. MR> Whould you bother of stick in a DoEvents in the loop, or is there a MR> problem with calling DoEvents too many time with iun a loop ? doevents releases the cpu to handle other events. if you are not in NT (which is a true multitasker) it is probably important if you are entering a lengthy loop that will prevent your other programs from doingtheir thing while it is running. another place i use doevents is in an async routine where i am displayinga progress bar. for example i have a routine that calls a really long SQL server stored procedure. because it is long, i call it asynchronously and display a progress bar. the progress bar has a cancel button on it in the event you want to cancel processing and roll back the transaction. the doevents call in the progressbar loop allows that click to be intercepted. without it, the cancel would not ever get seen until the loop completed. one place to be really careful of using them though is in any kind of dll. in those settings, they have the potential of diverting your program's attention to somewhere you don't want it to be. --- eileen@technologist.com * Origin: We Gladly Feast On Those Who Would Subdue Us (1:326/431)
