My point is that it is people like you and I, who are self-motivated, who can succeed regardless of parental involvement. However, we are in a minority. Government operated scholls simply fail to do MA> the necessary job. That I don't disagree with either. MA> The answer, however, does not lie in ending access for all MA> children to education, ... Okay, I'm not saying to shut the doors, I'm saying let's stop _forcing_ children into school. That should be the parent's responsibility. If the parents don't want to send their kids to school let them find their own babysitters. MA> but in where we place the responsibility to MA> educate and in who we delegate the responsibility to make appropiate MA> educational decisions. Have you delegated the responsibilty of raising your children to the government or does the government claim the responsibilty as it's own? As things appear from my position, the government (federal _and_ local) has claimed the right to raise our children. Unfortunately, too many people just go along with this idea. We should be demanding that as parents have the responsibilty to put food in their childrens' stomachs, they should also be held accountable for placing books in their childrens' hands. Right now, there are parents who don't care what their children are doing just as long as they are not at home inconveniencing the parents. These are the very children who do nothing but cause problems for teachers. It should not be the teacher's responsibility to raise other peoples' little barbarians (for lack of a more descriptive word). The more people cast off their little "hassles" onto the government "babysitter", the more we as a nation lose the right to "train up our [own] children in the way they should go". I just don't see how compulsory education can walk hand in with a free society. MA> If we remove government from education and MA> restore parental choice in education, competition and a free market MA> will resolve the problems that are resolvable. Okay, this I agree with. The only point that I'd like to bring up (okay, I'm actually pounding it into the ground:)) is that according to some folks, the literacy level of our nation began to plummet with the spread of compulsory education laws. When education becomes a rarer commodity, then it will be greatly desired. Our country's literacy rate was about 97% in 1880. This included all minorities. Let me make a disclaimer here: I have not done this research myself so it may be inaccurate. Also while the first compulsory education laws were in effect as early as the late 1600's, they were not widespread until the early 1900's when the child-labor laws were enacted. I think our only real area of disagreement is in the idea of "compulsory" education. I feel that compulsory education has created nothing more than a government babysitter. I do feel that the voucher system is completely viable and should be pursued. I even believe that Dole resigned his Senate seat (at least in part) to send a signal to fellow Senators and lobbyists that he was no longer part of that system, that any political debts were cancelled. But the fact remains that Bob Dole spent a long time learning the congressional system, and he played it well when he was in the Senate -- more honorably than some of his colleagues, perhaps, but he played it nonetheless. And on a few occasions (most notably turning his back on the NRA in an effort to seem more centrist), he disappointed me greatly. While I certainly would have preferred Bob Dole to Bill Clinton, the fact remains that he had become a career politician. Political power affects some people the way catnip affects some cats -- they do silly things while under its influence and will do even sillier things to get more. While I'm sure Bob Dole had every intention of acting only in the country's best interests if he had been elected President, he clearly enjoyed political power. I have a hard time trusting _anyone_ who enjoys that power so much he/she would campaign time after time to stay in Washington. (I might see things a little differently if our capital were in a city like Seattle, or San Antonio, or Nashville -- but Washington, D.C. isn't exactly the most desirable place to live. Of course, one could easily argue that Washington's current sad state is largely the result of all the government employees who live and work there. It wouldn't be hard for me to believe Ms. Lewinski made up the whole thing from an overactive imagination and a few occasions when she was near the President -- except, of course, for the facts that have come out so far, which make it clear that there were more than a few of those occasions and both she and Clinton have a history of similar episodes with other people. At most, she may have exaggerated some of the details. But that's neither here nor there. Let's discuss your theory instead. JS> The Paula Jones civil lawsuit is coming up for trial in May. What if, JS> this was a very elaborate attempt by the White House and Uncle Bob to JS> totally innundate the public before the trial with sexual escapades so JS> as to make whatever comes out of the trial seem "old news" and get the JS> public to say: "So what?" or "Big deal." I can't imagine that they'd invent L'Affaire Lewinski in order to make the Paula Jones case seem ho-hum by comparison; there are too many ways it could backfire. JS> It may also serve to make the prosecution of this civil suit more JS> difficult since everything has already come out in the press. It may JS> very well explain the leaks and where they're coming from. Thomas JS> Sowell in his syndicated column has stated that the ONLY person who JS> benefits from all these leaks is William Jefferson Clinton. No one JS> else and most certainly not Kenneth Starr. I think you may have hit a bulls-eye here, John. Regardless of how Tailgate came about, it has certainly complicated the evidence-gasthering process for Paula Jones' legal team (and vice-versa) since both groups of lawyers want to talk with many of the same people. Leaks always benefit the side that can best exploit the resulting interest; Clinton's side has certainly put a variety of anti-Starr spins on these leaks, which leads me to believe they had their spins worked out before the leaks occurred. Besides, Starr's team has been criticized in the past for being close-lipped; it would be out of character for them to suddenly start leaking like a sieve. Starr has nothing to gain by leaking info, but he would have everything (all pending cases, his current job, and his future job prospects) to lose if anyone exposed him as the leaker. I've listened to this debate for some time, and I must admit even I haven't made up my mind on this yet. On your argument's side, we're taxed on our taxable income, not our gross income. So to me it seems like paying 13% on $15000, beats the tar out of 21% on 40000. However on the opposite side, their argument seem's pretty straight forward once you get them on the defensive. It is their fervent belief that the prices on almost every single thing you can imagine will drop dramatically. That's your house, your car, your jewelry, your everything. But on the good side, if you don't already own most of the expensive items you will in your lifetime, you'll be in for a real bargain. The theory is, that your phone isn't taxed, your electricity isn't taxed, your employer doesn't need to hire tax people for payroll (you know every office has a singular expert in that), and so forth. So the costs will drop. Imagine the price of untaxed beer for example which would immediately drop nearly in half....except for the state part which is what really get's to them. It's an offshoot of the "Commissary Cigarettes" vs "Supermarket Cigarettes" based on the non taxing area. And to top it all off, these people who are taxed to make products for us are supposedly going to be happy to reduce their prices to the market immediately. It's a pipe dream in my opinion. They do say, it's a temporary rate, it should go down. I expect it would stay the same for some time, and they would go back to licensing fees, and everything else we see the states doing to this day to raise money.
