XFree86 is a specific implementation of X, that includes support for the video cards commonly found on "PC" hardware. However, ISTR that it also supports the Alpha. (?) I've had good KW> luck with cheap hardware and bad luck with "industry standard" KW> hardware, and vice versa. Now that statement would seem to be contradictory, Kurt. Generally, hardware "certified for use" on any Operating System -will- cost you more money, because somebody has to pay for the expenses involved in testing and certifying that product. If you've had mixed luck with hardware, then I'd say there's not much point in paying attention to "certified" hardware. In fact, I began ignoring "certifications" a long time ago. I'd dare say that not a single server systemboard running in my network is "certified" for SCO Unix. Of course, Netware is always a unique story, since it does things at the hardware level that no self-respecting systems programmer would ever attempt to do if they wanted to guarantee their software would work. Thus the need for "Netware certified" equipment. KW> Paying more doesn't mean you get more. Paying attention to the KW> industry, attention to the user groups, and attention to the KW> documentation does, however. Nevertheless, I suspect there is a grain of truth to Jonathan's observation. In general, the lower the cost, the cheaper the merchandise -- most notably observed in quality of manufacturing and the existence (or not) of readable documentation. --- * Origin: lawrence@eforest.houston.tx.us | The Enchanted Forest (1:106/6018) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: F1I00001 Date: 01/11/98 From: TIM FRANKLIN Time: 10:32am \/To: MAGNUS.ERIKSSON@F330.N205.Z2.FIDONE (Read 1 times) Subj: Re: XFree86 only x86? NetBSD/m68k comes with it's own version of X, which has appropriate drivers for Amiga graphics hardware. I don't know exactly what, as I don't run it, but I've used it on a mate's system. If there's a particular board you're orried about support for, I can possibly get info from him on it... I *am* using the NetBSD X drivers for Sparc, and they seem fine.
