Linux, being the bus is a less controllable environment you will share with the lowest common denominator of passengers whil FreeBSD is more like the carpool where you get a more select ride in a more comfortable environment, it's just a little harder to get in on. --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: Tech-Red BBS - Oroville, California - 916.533.3786 (1:119/71) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: EDE00002 Date: 09/08/97 From: TIM PROVENCIO Time: 09:11pm \/To: LAWRENCE GARVIN (Read 3 times) Subj: Re: What echo? To use ftp, you would need tcp-ip on your PC, since ftp runs over that protocol. with SLIP or PPP access to the host. TA> is there zmodem on unix?, all i'm provided with is kermit and xmodem. There is, if you have access to a C compiler. Chuck Forsberg, the author of Zmodem, has a package out called RZSZ that contains generic C source for X, Y, and Zmodem protocol drivers. Building it produces sz and rz, the send and receive modules. You link sz to sx and sb, and rz to rx and rb. sz/rz do Zmodem; sb/rb do Ymodem, and sx/rx do Xmodem. sz/x/b and rz/x/b use the same underlying executables - which protocol they initiate is determined by the name you use to invoke them. Look around for RZSZ*.ZIP. I have them built on my SCO servers at the office, and transfer files using Zmodem to/from PCs running Telix/DOS, Procomm/Windows, and Reflections-2/Windows. --- Blue Wave/DOS v2.30 [NR] * Origin: Lunatic Fringe * Richardson, TX * 972-235-5288 * (1:124/2113) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: EDF00000 Date: 09/08/97 From: ADAM COLLEY Time: 10:14am \/To: ASHER DENSMORE-LYNN (Read 3 times) Subj: What echo? Quote OFF: I'm not sure what the stuff in the above parentheses means. When I type fdimage A: at the DOS prompt, I get: Usage: fdimage [-dqsv] [-f size] [-r count] file drive When I type just fdimage, I get: FDIMAGE - Write disk image to floppy disk Version 1.5 Copyright (c) 1996-7 Robert Nordier Usage: fdimage [-dqsv] [-f size] [-r count] file drive -d Debug mode -f size Specify the floppy disk format by capacity, eg: 160K, 180K, 320K, 360K, 720K, 1.2M, 1.44M, 2.88M -q Quick mode: don't format the disk -r count Retry count for format/write operations -s Single-sector I/O -v Verbose I've tried applying the above syntax in every way I can think of and cannot get fdimade.exe to do its thing. Not sure whether my problem is DOS or UNIX. I also don't really understand their instructions: E:\> tools\fdimage floppies\boot.flp a: Are they assuming the file was downloaded to drive E: and to the directory TOOLS? Even if so, why the space between E:> and tools? Why the space between fdimage and floppies and what do they mean by "assuming the floppy images live in the floppies subdirectory"? It seems they have the file (boot.flp) before the drive path (a:)??? While you're answering dumb questions; can this installation disk (that, hopefully I'm building) install to floppies or only to a hard disk partition? If as I suspect it's only the latter, can you boot freeBSD from a floppy and then operate from the harddrive? Any help appreciated! --- * Origin: D.M.U.G. BBS Dayton Ohio (1:110/69)
