A few years back, I worked for a MIS manager who was almost, but not quite, all the way there. We ran a novell shop, and wanted to add a UNIX machine for internet mail, news, ftp, and WWW. Said boss bought a UNIXware application server license, because it could interoperate with IPX networks, then put it outside our firewall so it couldn't see the IPX networks. We hired a tech on as an assistant, and one of the first jobs he had was to take over the backup duties. He clicked the backup icon on the desktop, which had worked for months, and the machine hung. HARD. No way to get out of Motif, so we powered it down. panic: cannot mount root I tried taking the root drive off, re-installing the OS on another drive, and mounting the old boot drive to see if we could get anything back. Nada. lch. I asked the manager who was backing it up where the last backup tape was, and he said "It's here somewhere", but could never actually *produce* a tape. I switched to BSDI/OS 1.1, and we never looked at UNIXware again. :) --Kurt --- timEd/386 1.10+ * Origin: realitycheckBBS - San Francisco, CA +1 415 666 0339 (1:161/418) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: E5S00001 Date: 05/19/97 From: DAVID J PORTER Time: 09:46am \/To: ALL (Read 3 times) Subj: BASIC Interpreter/Compiler Does anyone know of any advanced BASIC Interpreter/Compilers available for U*NIX/Linux (i.e. something along the lines of the GFA BASIC for the Atari ST would be perfect). This was the base kernel for "old" SCO and ODT. "New" SCO, aka SCO OpenServer, is version 5 - i.e. base kernel 3.2v5. Anyone with a 2.1 SCO Unix product is probably looking at SCO UnixWare which is the USL code that SCO bought from Novell not all that long ago. In this case the kernel is actually SVR4 but the UnixWare release number is 2.1. Both SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare are available under the free license scheme and are in the process of being merged into a single product. N.B. Neither OpenServer nor UnixWare are "Unix". Long ago Thompson commented that Unix should be used as an adjective to describe a certain, loose, class of opertaing systems. Today UNIX *must* be used as an adjective - the trademark holder is the Open Group (nee X/Open) and the adjective UNIX describes an OS that meets the Single UNIX Specification. I've done this before, but all I had to do was rebuild the kernel with PPP support and the rest was easy. Any ideas?
