BARRY HANCOCK said in a message to Nick Alcock: BH> Nick & Paul, if memory serves well, Xenix, which I supported BH> from 1984-1988 (on Radio Shack model 16s and 6000s) Well, well... a fellow Radio Shack CSR. :) I was doin' the same from 1985-1986. Two days after I was hired, the store manager closed a P.O. with the Texas Department of Corrections for 25 three user Tandy 6000 Xenix systems. I spent the next year answering Xenix telephone calls for the field support reps and the TDC people. BH> was a Microsoft adaptation of Unix to the small computer world. I believe this is correct. Tandy licensed a source code of Xenix from Microsoft, and ported it to the M68000/Z80 architecture of the T6000. BH> Anyway, Radio Shack (Tandy Corp.) sold Xenix in the late 80's to a BH> small company called Santa Cruz Operation. This, however, Barry, is absolutely incorrect. Santa Cruz Corporation was manufacturing and distributing Intel based Xenix before the 80386 was ever released. In fact, it was SCO Xenix 386 that ultimately led to the demise of the Tandy 6000 Xenix system. But the two are not commercially related, aside from both being derived from the same Microsoft source code. SCO ultimately negotiated a source licence direct with AT&T and began distributing a product with the real "Unix" name in the early '90s. They still "support" their own product SCO Xenix v2.3.4, but only to a very limited extent. Recently they've announced a close-out sale on licenses for Xenix and certain other products. I fully expect them to become totally unsupported by the end of 1997. lawrence@eforest.houston.tx.us --- * Origin: The Enchanted Forest | Houston, Texas (1:106/6018) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: E2500009 Date: 01/31/97 From: LAWRENCE GARVIN Time: 08:03am \/To: JAMES BEARD (Read 4 times) Subj: Linux/BSD and Java James Beard said in a message to All: JB> Hi everyone.
