Well, I have a full set of documentation, so probably -reading- that will help a lot too, but lately I've been tied up with a different networking problem. Whaddya know about PCNFS and SCO OSR5? Seems that two of my segments have found it impossible to mount a PCNFS authenticated file system from the new SCO OSR5 boxes I installed. A packet trace of the transactions shows that the server -is- authenticating and validating the account at the PC, but when the PC sends the final 'mount' request to the 'mount' protocol -- the SCO box denies the user access! I've checked everything humanly possible on the SCO box to try and identify what could be causing this -- if'n ya got any creative ideas, I'm listenin! lawrence@garvin.hd.co.harris.tx.us --- * Origin: The Enchanted Forest | Houston, Texas (1:106/6018) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: D4T00002 Date: 04/22/96 From: BILL MARTIN Time: 07:10am \/To: ALL (Read 6 times) Subj: Multi Boot Two.... make that three q's here for you UNIX people.... There are a couple of ways to do this. OS/2 provides a Boot Manager which will give you a menu option at boot time, but it only supports three primary partitions -- however, the OS/2 can boot from an extended logical partition, so you can get four operating systems on the hard drive. Also, Linux provides a Boot Manager, and I believe it supports additional primary partitions. Restrictions in both cases are that your DOS/Windows type partitions must reside in the first 1023 cylinders of the hard drive. Check in OS2 for more on the OS/2 Boot Manager, and LINUX for more on the Linux Boot Manager. BM> Is a Unix box manditory to run as a site on the internet? Technically no. But I'm not aware of any serious Internet nodes that aren't running at least one Unix box for mail and nameservice support. BM> Do ALL types of UNIX boxes have to be rebooted to clean up the BM> memory fragmentation? Huh? :) So, who's been sharing their horror stories with you? My philosophy is that if a sysadmin feels the need to reboot solely because of 'memory defragmentation', that the proper response is to buy more memory -- not keep rebooting the system. I've administered about a half dozen flavors of Unix in the past seven years, and cannot honestly say that I've ever had to reboot for 'memory frag' reasons -- then again, mebbe that was cuz I was rebooting for all the other stuff I screwed up. Honestly, though, I've had machines running for three to six months straight without needing to reboot. Perhaps others have had different experiences, though. lawrence@garvin.hd.co.harris.tx.us --- * Origin: The Enchanted Forest | Houston, Texas (1:106/6018) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: D4U00000 Date: 04/23/96 From: SERGEY SCHEPETNOV Time: 07:36pm \/To: ALL (Read 6 times) Subj: Re: Linux for mVAX 3500 ?
