I have a Mitsumi (SB pro interface) CD ROM running quite happily under Linux. You simply need to select the appropriate type when you build/re-build the kernel. Probably one of the -> largest vendors is Digital Equipment (DEC) which sells AlphaServers -> and Alphastations based upon the 21164 (I think that's the number) -> AXP RISC processor which is currently being offered in speeds of up -> to 300mhz and is expected to rise. Thank you! Say, I'm being serious and honest in my reply here. Is it possible to play Doom or similar games on one of those Alphastations have UNIX of similar systems on them? I know there are probably DOS emulators that do the trick, but I know some OS Administrators out there are racking up bodies on a mainframe . --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: InfoQuest BBS Spring Texas 713-320-9163 (1:106/628.0) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: CG300006 Date: 11/28/95 From: HARLAN CARROLL Time: 02:43am \/To: YOUSUF KHAN (Read 10 times) Subj: Minix -> The advantage of Unix, being as it is a supposedly portable operating -> system, is that a 64-bit version already exists. Several of them as a -> matter of fact. They only run on 64-bit CPUs (i.e. none of the Intel -> family of chips, not even the Pentium can ever be 64-bit chips), -> which makes a lot of sense since you need a 64-bit CPU to run 64-bit -> operands. The only -> 64-bit CPUs currently in existence are the MIPS R-series of processor -> (R4000, R4400, R6400, etc.), and the DEC Alpha-AXP line of processors -> have Unixes ported to them, and they are 64-bit Unixes. -> -> What there isn't is a common set of standards for implementing 64-bit -> between the various manufacturers and you'll get a hodge-podge of -> mixed 64-bit and 32-bit operands. This is right now a goal of the -> various manufacturers: to standardized 64-bit implmentations. Yeah, it'd be less efficient running a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit station. I don't know why PC's kept MS or PC-DOS on their 386/486/586 computers. Isn't it possible to make a true 32-bit DOS that'll run old 16-bit DOS programs? And I'd love to see the 64-bit ver of UNIX or clones. But I'm still waiting to see a real 64-bit computer. And another thing: Is the Atari Jaguar really a 64-bit computer? I know this may not seems like the right place for that question, but when video game systems start touting that level of technology, someone has to confront it. Everyone else but Nintendo is 32-bit, PC designers included. --- WILDMAIL!/WC v4.12 * Origin: InfoQuest BBS Spring Texas 713-320-9163 (1:106/628.0)
