Is there a way to do it remotely... I have thought about dialing in remotely and using root to do shutdown but I figured I would drop carrier once shutdown started and I would be worse off because then SCO Unix would be waiting for me to hit Control D to begin normal maintenance... Any ideas??? Also, My new computer has a 4X CD ROM that I am dying to try out, however I believe there is no way to do it since I only have IDE instead of SCSI... Is that an impossibility... SCO Unix only seems to allow SCSI CD ROM's... I just installed a tape backup that plugs into a floppy cable... I ran the SCO tape install and when I reboot it shows the tape being there at the opening screen but I have not had a chance to save anything to it... SCO appears to allow my tape drive even though it is really hooked up to my IDE card... When I finally do my backup on a tape, will it work??? I am considering buying lots of stuff from Ready To Run Software... They have all the GNU stuff that I want (Perl, EMAC's, C) and they sell it in the Unix flavor that I need which is SCO... However, GNU is supposed to be free (or almost free), but it seems like a nightmare for a novice/almost intermediate Unix user like me go out and find it... Even if I do find it, it wouldn't be compiled for SCO... I think Ready To Run might be pricy (under $300 for a ready pak) but compared to what's on the market its a bargain... Anybody care to offer an opinion... I have been using my system for a while now, and I have created lots and lots of subdirectores (like hundreds and hundreds with different people saving to them)... I believe that my hard disk may be grossly fragmented... However, like in the DOS world, I simply use Defrag (which was included in DOS 6.xx) and it defragemented it in a jiffy... Unfortunately in the UNIX world, products like Stallions Crocidile want to stick me for $300.00 plus for their software so that I can defrag my hard drive... The price I think is a croc of ####... Is there any GNU software or anything else that I could download that could do that... Thanks in adance, -Patrick... (who is not a UNIX virgin but still needs more experience) ...
