Sounds like free-enterprise to me.. ML> It's socialism whether it is government mandated or not. When it is ML> government mandated, which it usually is, then it is especially ML> evil. Unfortunately, hospitals are generally forced to take ML> indigent cases. This coercion often comes from any of the three ML> branches of government. JB> I noticed that I didn't get an answer to the last question I posed. JB> What's the solution to the problem, Mark? ML> You're operating on the premise that there is a problem and that ML> government must solve it. It's just more of your hand wringing ML> again. ML> The solution is to promote free enterprise and charity and to stop ML> socialism. Let hospitals choose freely whether to offer "free" ML> non-government subsidized health care. Let the others choose freely ML> to run their hospitals as *TRUE* FOR PROFIT enterprises. Let ML> charity take care of the indigent. Sadly, in this country ML> government has stymied charities and at the same time has taken over ML> the work of charities. IMHO, the path to affordable health care would be a two step process. Number one, eliminate frivolous malpractice lawsuits by legally abolishing the "You don't pay if we don't win!" scenario practiced by personal injury lawyers. If people knew they had to pay lawyer fees weather they won or not, the incidence of frivolous lawsuits would sharply decline. There would no longer be a win/win situation for greedy individuals. Unfortunately, the only problem I can see with doing this is weather or not it would be at all legal. I know that it *should* be done, but not if it *can* be. The second step would be to, as you said Mark "run their hospitals as *TRUE* FOR PROFIT enterprises." The decrease in malpractice lawsuits would lead to increased revenue in lower malpractice insurance costs. The increased revenue could then be used to lower costs for consumers in a price competitive medical marketplace. Hospitals would be competing with each other based on price and service quality. This philosophy would directly benefit the consumer on all levels. Even if there is nothing done about the Medicare/Social Welfare system at all, the costs to treat individuals on our tabs would be lessened and thus lessen the tax burden. (Which would of course *not* be passed on to us in lower taxes. Unfortunately the government's slavering jaws for our hard earned money can never be sated with the current tax system in place.
