TF> 1) What is Unix and linux (my guess is an operating system like dos TF> only better?) ? Unix is a very good multitasking operating system, and it's one of the only "real" multitaskers around. OS/2 comes very close, and I'd assume Win 95, but Unix does it better (in my opinion). Linux, is a Unix workalike (basically the same thing as), for 386+ PC's. You'd need 20meg or so of HD space for a very limited installation, I've got about 180meg worth on my system. Plus, you'd want to have 8meg of ram minimum (IMO), and a 386-dx33. This is just a suggestion. TF> 2) What makes it worth using? Well, In my opinion, it's worth using if you have a need to use Unix. Unix does not have nearly as many applications/games..etc as Dos/Windows, it even has less than OS/2. Most of the application for Unix/Linux are custom made for commercial clients. The rest are for the most part, programming utilities. TF> 3) Is it expensive? Not at all, in fact, you can download it from various sources. But, It's a lot to download. For 30-40 bucks, you can get a book on Linux, along with a CD-Rom with (usually) the Slackware distribution. A small note about distributions. Linux is the operating system, there are many different distributions, which are basically just a *much* easier means to install. The various distributors supply text files, and programs to help you install Linux, plus they have many of the common utilities/games..etc. Another thing you'll hear about, is X-Windows or X11. The Linux version is XFree86. It's similar to windows. TF> Thank you in advance, I ask only to become a more well informed person There are several good books out there, on Linux. They'd cover the topic much better I'm sure.. -- bRAin DeaD >> internet: brenden.walker@grinder.com * The Babble Underground - 707 575 0636 - Home of JABBER --- RoseReader 2.52 P004433 Entered at [GRINDER] * Origin: The Grinder * Simi Valley CA (1:102/1019) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: CCS00007 Date: 08/19/95 From: NOEL VON KRAFT Time: 09:33pm \/To: GLEN HUTSON (Read 10 times) Subj: Running Dos in Linux/Unix Hallo Glen, 08 Aug 95 11:12HR schreef Glen Hutson aan John Poltorak (Sp?): GH> DOS emulators let you run dos applications while running Linux/Unix.. The current version is Dosemu 0.60.3. To install Dosemu, you need either a DOS - partition on your Hard-disk or a bootable DOS-disk. Once installed, no DOS - partition is required. DOSEMU is quite stable and is able to execute most of the available DOS-programs, except Windows. In some cases, you can start Windows from within DOSEMU, but this is not recommended at this moment. For more details, I refer to the documentation in the DOSEMU - package. It includes a little bit about Internet, Unix and Linux. My problem is simple. We have computers running Linux at school and just like we see in the books about Internet we want to dial the school number at our homes and see the login prompt in front of us using our terminal mula- tion programmes. Something like redirecting the terminal device to the modem device but as you know this not so simple. If it's not too complex I would like to learn (basically) how to make a Linux system (with a modem installed) wait for a dial and the send the data to the serial port (modem) and make the user run the programmes at home. I hope I can find an answer. Thanks in advance. With love from I.T.U. Math. Emre,... #8-) P.S.: If you think this would be off topic you know you're free to send a netmail. ... The thrill is gone... I'm running since several weeks the version AIX 3.2 e5 on my RS6000 and I encountered the following problem these last 2 days: For some strange reasons, the logical link /bin -> /usr/bin has disappeared from the system. I couldn't find any trace of this with the errpt log. The consequences are: - no access to the console anymore because the system can't execute /etc/getty /dev/console - no root login anymore (because the shell directory is referred to as /bin) and not /usr/bin - no user login anymore (for the same reason as above). If I try to reboot the system, it will hang up on display 553 (this suspects an error in /etc/inittab) and won't boot anymore. So, I have to boot on floppies, recreate the link and reboot from the disk afterwards. As I had the feeling to make an "upgrade", it looks more like a downgrade :-( if I still have to boot from floppies :-((((( As I didn't receive any correct explanations so far, I hope that there is someone out there that may provide me with some hints and/or tips.
