You're question is valid with ANY type of unix system. I suggest that you first figure out how to get dial up access running through a serial port. You may want to consider setting you modem up for autoanswer and your unix session to trigger when the carrier detect line goes high. I did this with a Sun system a couple of years ago. You may find out that you don't need a BBS package with a Unix system. A restricted shell with group-level security may be enough. If you need someone to forward your messages to a Linux Echo, just E-mail me at 1:230/71 and I'll be happy to post for you. Gating from one Fidonet echo to another is usually forbidden. --Bob. ... I like Norton Commander under Dos & QXV under Unix is just as good. It runs on a straight terminal (Wyse60 among others). There is a demo version available. Hello All! I'm installing BSDI for a friend of mine that just got his 56k line nstalled. The installation itself was pretty "up-front" without too many suprises. Overall I was pretty impressed with it as far as being "internet-ready". I'm having a couple problems in the fine tuning of a few parameters I'm hoping someone out there has been through already and might offer some advice. When I bring up Xconfig everything seems to work real smooth, all the hardware is listed and choosable. Nothing out of the ordinary, it has support for all the equipment in use for this machine. The fun begins when I try to save/exit the config program. Any keypress, other than the ones to choose equipment, gives me a resounding "beep". The menu states to press F3 to save and exit, or to abort and exit, these too just "beep" at me. At this point I'm trapped in a menu with no way out. When I first went through this, I had not yet set up the vitual consoles, and was not on the network yet, so I had to power off the machine to get out. FUGLY!!! I'm not experienced enuff with Xwindows to "just" write my own Xxxxx.ini file, so I'm dependant upon the utility to do this for me, or to snake a copy of someone else's and adapt it to his equipment. The other thing that's nagging me is the .profile trying to default incoming telnets as [xterm], it took some playing but to get a usuable shell from remote telnet I have to tell it I'm using vt102, then after getting to the prompt to issue a "reset". I'm thinking this could be partially to blame on the default gettytab and/or ttys because just as soon as I establish a telnet connection the host is not sending eol's correctly. I get something that looks like: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Login: xxxxx password: xx#xx# BDSI from somewhere in california and this is my official header for some legal reasons. This machine is running some variant of Unix that was born back in the early 70s in partnership with a bunch of universities and therefore you must all pay homage. Welcome to my internet machine, we are so-and-so running something or another trying to accomplish who knows what. terminal type? [xterm]:xx### The message of the day some useless drivel in some vain attempt to remind you of how stupid some people can be, and possibly cause a smile. my.domain# my.domain# ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is there some profile on the box that I have not found yet, that would correct this problem? Has someone written a profile already to correct this kind of thing? The manual that came with this thing is about as worthless as the new owners manual for a car. Useful if you need to know how to operate the door handle, but it doesn't go into what to do when you lose your keys. :) Scott --- Brought to you by: * Origin: Warlocks' Den VFC (1:3665/420) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: CBF00003 Date: 07/07/95 From: JIM HOLLOMAN Time: 12:40pm \/To: THOMAS SCHENK (Read 14 times) Subj: AIX and 486 Tom, Can you tell me if AIX is avaliable for the Intel 486 or Pentium based machines or is it a proprietary OS that runs only on the RS-6000 machines? What is the advantage of an RS-6000 over a Pentium based machine? From what I have seen, the RS-6000 cost a good deal more than a Pentium machine with roughly the same speed? In addition, and like the Power PC chip, it uses an instruction set that is different from the Intel chips; which have become the de facto industry standard. For example, under what conditions would a RS-6000 based server be preferred over a Pentium based server?
