This depends on the type of network, the number of machines on the network and **MANY** other things. I work on 2 networks, 1 is all FDDI and I get better response for files through the network then through the locally mounted drive. It is fast. This network is also big - about 400 machines. In fact, the local drive is used strictly for the OS to boot the machine and swap space. All programs are run locally through nfs. Very good performance and the network as I understand it, is never above 60% utilization, even during full load conditions. The other network is all ethernet. Through nfs, I get adequate response usually, but if somebody else on the network is copying a large file, I feel it. If you are looking for kbps or mbps, I can't help you, sorry. ___ * MR/2 2.14 NR * Nothing is so smiple that it can't get screwed up. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: HAL-PC - (713)963-4100 (1:106/4100) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 176 UNIX Ref: CAP00011 Date: 06/19/95 From: SCOTT DOWDLE Time: 09:52am \/To: TOM REYNOLDS (Read 15 times) Subj: Linux Distributions? You can get it on CD-ROM for a retail around $30... or you can get it with a Preview version of Caldera Network Desktop from Caldera for only $29 + $10 shipping. Buying the Preview of Caldera gives you a free Preview 2 when it comes out and a discount torwards the final release. Red Hat's distribution can also be gotten via ftp... once they get around to posting it. :) Caldera, Inc. 1-800-850-7779 http://www.caldera.com ftp.caldera.com Red Hat Software 1-919-309-9560 ftp.redhat.com I hope that helps! Could you (or someone else) provide reference as to where I can find this product? Source is preferred, but binaries could be handy too. Most often, they will provide you with a Unix shell account, and you can learn Unix this way, as well as exploring the Internet. If you're fortunate to have a provider such as Netcom.com in your area, they'll offer you an unlimited time account for something like $25/month, which, for what you're getting, is one heck of a deal.. The sed and awk book and Unix in a Nutshell mentioned above are from them and most of their books have some kind of animal on the cover, so they are easy to spot. SE>If not (and I assume not), was there ever a *nix that could run on an SE>8088 or 8086? There's Minix, from O'Reilly, but I don't think you want to pay the US$160- for it. Otherwise, there are plenty of free Unices that run on 386 or better processors. Check the Fido-Linux area. OTOH, I've occasionally seen people give away PDP-10's & 11's, AT&T 3B1's and 3B2's, 6300's, Unix-PC's (last four all from AT&T) and Sun2's. Many in good working condition. Lurk around on the forsale, and HAM groups, find some user groups of the above mentioned machines in your area. You might just find someone who's got one extra or willing to sell_cheap/give it away. Just saw someone in Palo Alto give away 5 gig's of IPI drives w/ the VME controller & rack, and I know someone here in T.O. who's willing to let 4 600meg SMD Eagles go for $1- each (only if you take all four, about 100pounds each). Of course, your parents would freak out if you brought these home, since they'd probably go broke paying for the electricity to run these and the noise is incredible....this drivel is just regarding the drives, not the machines above. Check also w/ the local university/college, sometimes they have old Unix workstations to give away (not likely in big cities tho, only in smaller towns). I also see tons (sometimes literally) of stuff being given away in the Silicon Valley area in CA...too bad I'm no where close.
