I think what happens is, they make their first models of good quality to get a name in the market, then the quality drops of abit. As with your friend, I have noticed the low end is good, but not great sounding, generally I have found my Fender acoustic a good instrument. Mind you, their a better quality ones around. When I took a friend shopping for a new Fender Electric, we wen't to 5 different shops just to try out the guitar, all shops that had Fenders varied, strange thing about guitars, never buy the first one you see, try as many as you can( of the same model) as they do varie in sound. Tom's Traynor was fine here, but when I took it to him and we turned it up from "condo-volume" to "house-volume", it started doing it. It didn't start immediately, rather, right after I hit a chord. It almost sounded like a microphonic tube, and was 100% high-frequency stuff. My solution was to replace the wires that I made longer with shielded cable. Fender's solution was to hang small caps everywhere to bleed the HF off before it hit the grids of the output tubes. TS> But with true GAS, do you know what you're spending until it's oo TS> late? Output wattage is a function of plate voltage, the impedance of the output tubes, transformer, the number of output tubes, and of course, the level of the signal hitting the grids. IF an EL34 has the same impedance as a 6L6 (it's gotta be reasonably close because Carvin allows you to use either with a simple flip of a bias switch), then the plate voltage would be comparable in any 100 watt amp. You couldn't get a JCM900 to distort on 10? Something was wrong with it... that's one of the highest gain amps available. SOMETHING isn't working fine ~8-). Honestly, if it started when you put the new tubes in, I'd pull them out and put the originals back in (you DID keep them for spares, right?). If the problem goes away, then the source of the problem is either the tubes themselves, or the way they fit into the socket (unlikely, because merely flipping the standby switch "fixes" the problem). The contacts in the tube sockets may have widened a bit and aren't holding as tightly as they should be. With the amp off, unplugged, and power supply caps discharged, you may be able to go into the sockets with a jeweler's screwdriver and carefully bend the contacts into a tighter grip. Again, I'd put the original tubes back in first... if the problem still exists (and I'm betting it won't), then attack the sockets. Bias can alsway be adjusted, just not always with a screwdriver. Often, you'll have to change one or more resistors. That's how my Carvin is set up.
