Carl Perkins died Momday (1/22/98) of complications from a series of strokes; he was 65. This is the third time I have tried to write a short obituary that focuses on his ability as a guitarist -- each of the two previous times, I ended up with several dozen lines about his kindness, philanthropy, devotion to his wife and family, and all the other thing that made Carl Perkins a highly-regarded member of his community. It isn't that he wasn't a brilliant guitarist -- he certainly was! -- but around Jackson, Tennessee, Carl's musical talent always took a back seat to the qualities that made him a good citizen, civic leader, and neighbor. Listen to his music. Read his biography, _Go, Cat, Go!_ (by Carl Perkins and David McGee, Hyperion, 1996). Watch the various tributes that will be televised over the next few days, and the reruns of TV appearances he has made over the years. His talent is obvious, but keep in mind that Carl was much, much more than a picker, singer and songwriter. Carl Perkins was the finest, gentlest, most generous, least pretentious man you could ever hope to know. He will definitely be missed. ... Carl Perkins: 1932-1998. CBS's idea was to bump the wattage up... back in the 70s, everyone had to have a 100 watt amp, because that's the largest that was commonly available. CBS started tweaking the voltages, and in the late 70s, began rating the Twin Reverb at 120 watts. RL>> They know, but the tubes' published specs are ###v, so they built to RL>> meet those specs. This is oversimplified, but I'm not getting into crossover distortion or slew rates: The gain of the tube is basically fixed (depending on how it's biased). Hypothetically, say the tube has a gain of 10:1. With a 1v input signal, it will dump 10v from the plate to ground (remember, a tube's output is the inverse of the input). At 10v, it will dump 100v to ground. If you're running a 350v plate level, the tube will begin to produce distortion at an input level beyond 35v. Above that, there is no more voltage to dump to ground, so the peak of the wave clips, producing distortion. If you push the plate voltage to 700v (the EL34 can handle up to 800), the tube will now not start distorting until the input exceeds 70v. This also doubles the output wattage. Try California. January 1st, 1998, no smoking in bars or restaurants. It's considered an OSHA voliation (the health of the bartenders and waitresses). First offense fine is like $100 (plus penalty assessment), second is $300, and third is $500. I once had a $280 fine for something else that was $1300 after they added the penalty assessment. Oh... and they make you take an 8-hour smoking cessation class... they're treating it like a DUI. So now, instead of smoking in the bar, people run out the front door when the band takes a break and leave their butts all over the sidewalk to be washed into the street and eventually ocean. Ya... Sacramento has some real rocket scientists. C-ya! All other mics are wussies. Yeah, the 58 is one of the most bullet-proof mics around. They make a good part-time door-stop/wheel chock. Don't discount mics that are less durable, since all things are a compromise. There is a LOT of sound gear which is less durable, but which sounds better, than most of the very low end stuff. A Peavey mixer will withstand a lot more abuse than a Midas or Neotek, for example, but the difference in sound is pretty astonishing. A SM58 will definately take more abuse than any Neumann, but there is the same difference in sound. You can paraphrase an old racers' phrase: Quality costs money - how good do you want to sound? When I was doing sound for a living, it wasn't uncommon for us to have $40,000 in mics with us (only four of which were SM57/58). We carried a handful of Neumanns (84s and 87s), a lot of Beyer, AKG, a couple of Telefunkens. We also carried a few spares, since a U87 will generally last only until the first time it gets dropped. It's all about compromise. --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: AEN NEWS - 334-735-0306 (1:18/175) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 175 GUITAR Ref: F1W00002 Date: 01/26/98 From: MARK CARRIG Time: 07:50am \/To: AL THOMPSON (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: Sound in the fingers Sven...
