But, I'm trying desperately to find a way for the new (BBS CHALLENGED) person to be able to use the MAXIMUS FSE and not find themselves staring at a blank screen and a blinking cursor with no clue where they are or what to do next. People seldom read help screens.. they just drop carrier and don't call back. The BBS's scene is losing way too many new users already.. I want to find a solution to this, at least as relates to MAX. Is there an easy way to make drop-down menus? like a VK> mex program someone's written? I did a simular thing but not in Max since I couldn't figure out how to do it in Mex. What I did is use the OpenDoors package to write the windows for each of the menus and load the programs in the appropriate Maximus CTL file (e.g. menus.ctl). The menus use the arrow keys to highlight choices and then hit enter to start the option. You can have popup windows, whatever you want, using this method. The really cool thing about this is you can hide the cursor in the highlighted option so that there appears to be no cursor and the whole thing looks really professional (i.e. like a canned program). Two of the drawbacks are that it slows things down a tad but the professional look is worth it, and you have to be able to program in C. Maurice ... I use a much easier system with my MAX and caller-ID. It's called a BEL-TRONICS caller-ID unit model AD-100! This unit intercepts callers who are blocking their info -OR- who have been placed in the unit's REJECT LIST. (It stores up to 100) The only trick was getting MAX not to answer until the second ring which was accomplished by diddling around with MAX.CTL so the modem itself answers after two rings, and all MAX looks for is the CONNECT string. I'd think long and hard before allowing anyone outside of yourself that sort of access. User drops to TimEd. User goes into "Doorway Mode". User hits ALT-J. User is now at the DOS prompt. User formats your C drive. :-( This may be a worst case scenario but there's loads of other nasty things a user can do while in TimEd-- like deleting all of the messages in MUFFIN with just a couple of keystrokes.
