As for the team reports in football, I found that most of the stuff in those little articles was something I had read in the daily newspapers anyway. Especially, now with the internet, I'll read the New York papers to keep up with the Giants plus I subscribe to a Giants newspaper. If TSN doesn't cover soccer then I don't really have a whole lot of use for it. --- TriToss (tm) 1.03 - #28 * Origin: PC GARDEN BBS * Gibsonville NC (City of Roses) 336-449-7857 (1:3654/18) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: F3L00000 Date: 03/16/98 From: KAYE SHEN Time: 11:55am \/To: CHARLES WILSON (Read 0 times) Subj: Re: NCAA CW> What teams does everybody think will make Ito the final four I think it wil CW> be North Carolina Duke Kansas and Arizona how about the jayhawks... --- Renegade v5-11 Exp * Origin: The Licking Factory, OS/2 in NJ! It beats any of the weekly mags like TSN and SI simply because it's up-to-date. It has the same stats that TSN normally carried. Plus they cover soccer (which is a major sport to me). The only way that a weekly could have that USA Today doesn't are "up close and personal" type articles. I'm more of a stats-type guy anyway. --- TriToss (tm) 1.03 - #28 * Origin: PC GARDEN BBS * Gibsonville NC (City of Roses) 336-449-7857 (1:3654/18) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: F4300000 Date: 04/02/98 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 07:11pm \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: As I See It... Just what the hell was Reggie White thinking when he wrote his speech? Hey, I speak out on racism, no matter who practices it. White's comments were dangerous and more importantly, a sad commentary on the beliefs that many people secretly hold as true. There are NO excuses for White's comments both racial and homophobic. **** Oh and don't think that just because he's a Tarheel that Makhtar Ndiaye is exempt from my wrath as well. His false accusations are a black eye on the Tarheels and a sad example of how some people feel the need to play the "race card" to overshadow their poor play. What makes this all really sad is how this has taken a little away from the great stories in college basketball this year. Still, the stories are compelling and worth looking at. **** I'm going going to start with Tennessee since they won it all first. Are they the best ever? Yes, I believe it to be so. They've done it against some of the toughest competition ever and a women's game that is as competitive and level as it's ever been. The game really has leveled off more this year, however, the Lady Vols are on a level of their own. Pat Summitt (More on her and the program later) has assembled a truly great group and her team is only getting stronger with her latest recruits. Oh and for those that don't want to give Holdsclaw her dues -- you should take the time to realize how much like the Tarheels the Vols program is and how Summitt's stars don't get the numbers like they do at other programs. Some of the best Volunteer players are rarely average more than 16-21 points per game (She's lost some players to other schools because they can get more shots at other schools. No championships but lots of points). As an example of how much it *hurts* the individual, she had two players transfer to Tennessee and they were averaging 29 and 30 points respectively before and 19 and 20 after. Holdsclaw could be averaging a lot more at any other school but she wouldn't have been a member of 3 NCAA championship teams. **** Congrats to Tubby and the boys. Tubby is now the second ex-Tulsa Golden Hurricane coach to win a national championship (and for the moment, probably the last. Tubby and Nolan may win another, however, I don't believe any of the other ex-Hurricane coaches are winning anything any time soon). Kentucky was relentless and unwilling to fold. At any time this year, they could have folded up their tents and yet, they made comeback after comeback to win the games. The only bad thing is that Tubby's got no where to go but down. Wildcat fans -- you can't win every year so don't get mad when they don't. HOWEVER, they are capable of winning it again next year. **** Let's not forget the "losers", Utah. They *may* have gained some respect for the WAC but knowing how hard-headed and stupid the Eastern/Midwestern media is -- I doubt it. Not only did they beat more highly rated opponents, they did it convincingly. No, their being in the Finals was a fluke. Utah's been capable of being able to go further for years, however, unlike the Big 10 or the Big East, they were never given the kind of easy ride into the Sweet 16 as the "Big" boys. **** Haven't seen "The Cinderella Season: The Lady Vols Fight Back" lately? You need to watch it to see how Summitt gets her players to go further than they are expected. She didn't back off of her players and they didn't pull any punches when they talked about her. If you think that they were going to take it easy on Pat, you're wrong. They showed the players crying after a loss and her getting on to them when they wern't doing their best. If you see this show, you'll understand why she was offered the men's job. She's as good as ANY coach in the NCAA and so are many of her female colleagues. **** Looks like Boston isn't going to win 40, however, it took a 2-9 swoon for that to happen. The Celtics are a mortal lock for the playoffs next year and I think that they're going to make a run at Geiger or Divac to solidify their center position. What they need to do is get into Anderson's head because where he really chokes is in the playoffs. He takes even poorer shots and his teammates mysteriously disappear. To get far in the playoffs, they need to have him play "team" ball instead of the "me" ball that he's played for ars. **** Raise your hands if you were foolish enough to believe that Traylor was going to stay if they took the interim off of Ellerbee's job title. Traylor had "leaving early" written all over his face from the moment he lumbered on to the floor at Michigan. **** Looks like the Spurs are going to ride their 21 gun salute through the playoffs. With Perdue, Duncan and Robinson in the lineup, the team has played its best ball. They currently hold the 4th spot in the West and a first round appointment with the Suns. The Suns' guards have had the upper hand in their meetings so far, however, I think that this lineup may go a long ways to make up for that. **** Speaking of the playoffs, the West is so week that more than half of the teams clinched spots nearly 3 weeks ago and now ALL Western spots are spoken for and only positioning is left to be decided. In the meantime, the Bulls didn't become the first team in the East to clinch a spot until last week and so far, 5 spots are still up for grabs. The West has feasted on a lot of weak sisters and it will show in the Finals. **** I really had to laugh at all the references to the "diluted" pitching by ESPN and Fox Sports because every time they were saying "Yet another example...", the starter(s) involved were veterans and we're not talking about retreads. **** The more things change, the more things stay the same. Greg Maddux, who has been the least supported Brave for all his years in Atlanta, has gotten off to yet another one of his starts -- lots of innings, no runs and a no decision. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: is the best freshman I've ever seen - Vitale (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: F4400000 Date: 04/02/98 From: GREG KURTH Time: 10:03am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: NHL playoffs seeding Can someone explain how the NHL seeds teams for the playoffs, and how the post season is set up? . --- SLMR 2.0 #1330 Confucius say: Don't quote me with stupid accent. --- FLAME v1.1 * Origin: Telnet toltbbs.com or call 313-854-6001, Boardwatch #55 (1:234/2)
