--------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 172 CRAFTING Ref: F5G00046 Date: 04/14/98 From: PETER GROVES Time: 03:55am \/To: ALL (Read 2 times) Subj: Craft Suppliers Hello everyone. For those that don't already know me my name is Peter Groves. I'm a very young happily married 40 yr. old male. Yes I'm happily married... just ask my wife...... and this will last as long as I don't spend too too much time on my crafts...... I am fairly new to crafts. I have enjoyed them for years but only just recently discovered that I have a talent to make some of them. I don't owever have much of a budget (fixed income) to make the crafts. Having looked round, I've come to realize how high of prices they charge for many of the tools and supplies needed to make the crafts. Sooo many crafts, so little money, not enough hours in the day. Here is were some of you out there might be of some help to me. I live in Hamilton, Ontario. No problem so far. I also have a most wonderful Micheals Craft Store that has many wonderful supplies and tools. But often times they are at a price beyound my reach at this time. I am looking for alternatives o the retail outlets. Perhaps some of you can suggest suppliers that have cataloges of what they sell that I might be able to send away for. Mail order tools and supplies are great if I can get them cheaper than from the store. I prefer the cataloges that are for free when ever possible. I am interested in a great many crafts. Ones that are of current focus are cross-stitching, needle point, quilting, podging for my wife, stamping maybe for both my wife and I. I have also tried my hand at some stenciling on the wall of my living room. Other crafts that I may try later also include silkribbon embroidery, andregular embroidery. I may also try some jewelry, earring making. My wife may try beading with my help. Having seen some wonderful how to starter books on knitting, I too may consider trying that. y wife loves the warmth of a good home made sweater. The more affordable cost f an Icelandic sweat made at home has also caught her interest. Since she is disabled and of limited had motor skills, she can only hope that I learn the skills to craft one or someone else makes her one. I am also interested in other wearable art such as liquid stitching (paint in a bottle) that can go on shirts, hats, aprons and many other clothing and accessories. Please send me addresses of mail order places, good craft magazines and laces best suited to purchasing supplies and getting ideas from at the most budget oriented places. Hoping to hear back from many of you soon so I best be going now so you all can get back to me as soon as possible. By for now. But not for long. ...Peter Groves...Hamilton, Ontario...TTYL... ... I used the same knitting pattern that everyone up here is using to make cotton dishcloths. I just made larger or smaller squares as required. For the pillows, I made squares large enough to fit 18 inch cushion forms. My next project is to make a towel you can wipe your hands on using a similar patern, but different. I'll let you know when I finish it. AM>> I really miss my dogs! < BH> Are you going to ever think about another dog? This gives you a listing of things you can get for nothing. My web page can be located at: www.hwcn.org/~ai277/Profile.html Also, there are a few places there that gives charts and patterns for cross stitch, and other things crafty! I took a hammer to the bathroom floor last night. There was a "soggy" spot from the time last fall where Jerry over filled the jucuzzi and the loor was damaged and needing a good repair job because it had given way. Well today I get to be floor repair woman as well as woodworker and master tile and carpet layer. How's that for a crafty project! And believe me it will be a craft that I have not done in a looong time! I get to be creative with the tiles and the carpeting. Putting in the new sub floor and flooring will be a challenge to say the least but I think I am ready for the job. The only thing I am still working out is just how I want to proceed with the tile designs. I left a hole in the floor last night that is about 4'x 2' in deminsion. I covered it last night with a piece of old panneling so we wouldn't fall into it when walking across the floor. And of course it has to be directly n front of the toliet and door ... so of course the heaviest traffic area of the bathroom. I will be making a big mess in my studio today with all the sawing and saw dust... fortunately this will vaccuum up easily since I have cut any amount of wooden blocks on the floor in this room for RS's. Jerry is a bit concerned about my ability to do this job but I am confident and know from the past that I can do such things. Years ago I took a hammer and tore out my bathroom walls in the old house... there was a gaping hole in the wall behind the bath tub. I then fixed it with drywall and then installed a new bathtub enclouser... it worked well for many years before I gutted the bathroom and re did the entire thing! So doing this little repair job on the floor is a nothing. Just a crafty thing to do that is a bit different. Hopefully it won't take to long to complete so I can get back to my quilting projects at hand as well as the pergamano piece I have started and sitting on my light table. Of course Anne I have done a bit of cross stitching ... and plastic canvas work. You would think I have my own craft store here with all the supplies I keep here. It will be a very long time before I really have to buy anything as far as supplies go! Everything from paper to paint to yarns to fabrics... I hopefully am all set for some time. And it has been non-stop ever since... I have been quilting now for a bit over 6 years... and rubber stamping about 5 years... the pergamano only close to a year now... and all of these because of participation in these echos. I admit to being absent for all to long! I got so busy developing my web site and of course doing all the things that I wanted to do craft wise that fido got put by the wayside.... but I still try to stay in touch. Don't you just love these kinds of finds! I am always looking for good bargins and am always delighted when I find these kinds of goodies. So often the sellers don't have a clue on what they are selling at what price! I just helped a friend of mine get a new computer... she is so delighted she can hardly stand herself.... the new computer is a 166MMX Pentium with cdrom, sound card and 2.5meg hard drive... 16 megs of ram... and it was totally with delivery under $600.00! A friend of her's recently bought the excact same unit for $2500.00 needless to say she got a bargin there... so now she will be able to get any number of the crafty things she is into... it is her first computer! -> I have a newer 'brother machine' but you just cant get parts for it, and it -> has so many features, takes a degree to figure out just how to load the - bobbin! I had a Kenmore machine that was close to 30 years old before it finally died last year... I miss that old machine. The cam shaft fell apart! It was the greatest machine... I too had a newer machine but it did not give me the same results as the old Kenmore so I only used it for emergencies... I also have my old treadle machine and I love the stitching it has and use it occassionally still... wouldn't trade it for anything. Glad to be able to touch base with you again.
