BUTTERFLY ORNAMENTS SIZES 4 1/2" and 51/2" wide

MATERIALS NEEDED
Bedspread weight cotton thread ( Knit Cro Sheen): 1 ball White or Ecru.
Crochet hooks size 2 and 6, or size to obtain gauge.
Fabric stiffener, 1 white or ivory chenille stem.
GAUGE: 8 dc and 4 rows = 1" (with 2 hook); 18 dc and 9 rows = 2" (with 5
hook) To save time, take time to check gauge.
NOTE: A change in hook size is used to change the ornament size. Use the 2
hook for the larger ornament, and the 5 hook for the smaller ornament.

DIRECTIONS BODY:
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, do not join.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc = 10 sc. Work even in rnds of sc until body is
2" long, sl st in next sc. Cut thread.
SMALL WING:
(make 2) Ch 8.
Row 1: Work 3 dc in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in last ch. Ch 4,
turn.
Row 2: Sk next sp, 2 dc in next dc, dc in 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 1, sk
next ch, dc in next ch. Ch 4, turn and at end of each row through Row 6.
Row 3: Sk next sp, 2 dc in next dc, dc in each dc to last dc of group, 2 dc
in next dc, ch 1, skl ch, dc in next ch.
Row 4: Sk next sp, dc in next 7 dc, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch.
Rows 5-6: Sk next sp, dc dec over next 2 dc, dc in each dc to last 2 dc of
group, dc dec over next 2 dc, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch.
Row 7: Sk next sp, holding on hook last lp of each st work dc in next 3 dc,
yo and through all lps on hook, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch. Ch 2, turn,
sl st in 2nd ch of turning ch at end of previous row.
Picot Rnd: Sc in sp at end of last row, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook for
picot, sc in same sp, sc and picot and sc in end sp of each row around
entire outer edge of wing, and with sc and picot and sc in same ch as 3 dc
of Row 1 for one wing point and sc and picot and sc in ch 2 sp at other
wing point, join to first sc. Cut thread.
LARGE WING:
As for Small Wing through Row 3.
Row 4: Rep Row 3.
Row 6: Sk next sp, dc in next 9 dc, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch.
Rows 6-8: Rep Row 5 of Small Wing.
Row 9: Rep Row 7 of Small Wing. Picot Rnd: As for Small Wing.

FINISHING:
Sew each of 2 wings tog at points, then large and small wings tog at sewn
points. Stiffen wings with fabric stiffener.
Cut chenille stem in half and curl one end of each piece. Glue straight
ends of antennae into body, then body onto center of wings.
