My mom crocheted me an afghan one year. WA> It was the first one she had ever done so it turned WA> out rather strangely shaped. I still use it now and then WA> though. I learned to crochet over 26 years ago, and the multitude of peculiarly shaped potholders that were my entry into yarnwork have long since worn out. Funny how fondly I remember some of those colossaly ugly things (I used to buy only those florescent colors...). Taught a friend to do grannies and she had such a loose stitch that her afghan was VERY airy, but she was so proud, I was happy for her. I'm looking forward to when my kids make me some truly ugly potholders -- I will use them daily and love every stitch or hanging thread. WA> On the other hand, she put some of my x-stitch pictures WA> on a childhood theme together with my favorite colors WA> in a quilt for me that I just love. Almost feel guilty WA> for using it! Aaah. Those kinds of things are so precious. JS> They are currently all in the nearest kid's bedroom screaming and JS> roaring at one another -- some kid version of "Animal Kingdom", I JS> think. Hmmmm. I'm starting to get the urge to make a ripple afghan for JS> a double bed... think I'll start with ecru... WA> Just think how happy you will be when they go back WA> to school! I have friends who feel exactly the same way WA> you do right now! I missed the little stinkers (except for the little one who's still here at home -- he's my buddy). The ripple afghan got started and is about 2/3 done -- double bed sized. JWS ... The following is a synopsis of copyright laws, as they would pertain to the reproduction of crafting patterns. I would appreciate you all taking a ouple of minutes to read it through. 1. Crafting designs, graphs, characters and such are covered under "graphic, pictoral, and sculptural works." 2. A copyright takes effect the moment a piece becomes tangible. A design, therefore, is copyrighted from the moment it first appears in a drawing, printout, or print. Use of the copyright symbol is optional. 3. The owner(s) of a copyright retains exlusive rights to copy, display, distribute, and/or publish his/her design. 4. The owner(s) of a copyright MUST give permission before copies can be made. These copies include, but are not limited to, photocopies (except for and "insurance copy" for your own use while you still are in possession of the original), handwritten, scanned, reproduced by computer, etc. 5. Copyrights are valid for a period of 28 years minimum, and can be renewed for either a further 28 or 47 years, the latter depending on the date the original copyright became effective. For this reason, it must be assumed that, although the design was published in an old magazine, or one that is no longer published, the copyright is probably still in effect. *Addendum* (courtesy of Sam Waring) If the material was published after 1979, the copyright lasts for the lifetime of the author/creator, plus fifty years beyond their death. 6. Copyrights vary. The holder of the original copyright can sell partial rights (to a magazine, for example), yet still retain the right to publish again. For this reason, it is sometimes difficult to know who owns the copyright. 7. In producing a crafted work from someone else's design, you can exhibit or sell it as a product of your crafting skill, but not as your own design. 8. It is not illegal to sell or give away the ORIGINAL design/pattern you have purchased - provided you don't keep a copy for your own use, as well. 9. Bear in mind that, if you create your own design, these same laws protect you, too. 10. For more information, check in THE WORLD ALMANAC AND BOOK OF FACTS, or contact the COPYRIGHT OFFICE, INFORMATION SECTION, LM- 401, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. 20559. Registration application can be ordered by calling (202)707-9100 - request Circular 1. Filing fee is currently $20.00.
