The pics are fine, they BC> just don't (in my mind) show off the dolls to their greatest advantage. I did visit your page. You are very industrious with your things for sale. I only have a monochrome monitor and it doesn't do much with graphics. But they did show up as dolls with faces and there were lights and shadows. That's more than I can say for the graphics on some web pages, which emerge as "blobs". BC> I'll have to be careful about that, then. I noticed the nice color (it's BC> about the same as the French Antique porcelain slip I use) that shouldn't BC> need much painting. Tell me, does it keep that color after it's baked? BC> Or does the heat change it? By now you've probably baked something and found it DOES change color. You won't have any little palefaces. The longer it's left in, or the hotter it's baked, the browner. In fact, if you made an all-one-piece doll, you may have found the nose and fingers burned before the head was done. That's the purpose of the foil ball inside, with a thin skin of clay over it. It takes more time to prepare, that way. But the foil reflects the heat so it bakes uniformly inside to out, and out to in. Also, I use a lower heat than the Sculpey packages used to call for. I even wrote to the Sculpey people some years ago. They said the minimum to set up was 250 degrees at 10 minutes (for tiny miniatures with a foil core). I usually set my timer for 10 minutes, then look at it again every 1 to 3 minutes (depending on what I'm baking. ) I set my oven at about 255 to be sure it will be just above the 250 mark. My thimbles and doll hands are usually in about 13 minutes, the doll heads (3") not more than 15-17. If you take it out too soon, it still feels a little greasy to the touch (when cooled). Instead of feeling dry. If you leave it in too long, the smaller features burn. I had trouble keeping the eyelids, where they went over the acrylic eyes, from darkening because they were so thin-thin compared with the other clay. Doll hands with individual fingertips are also sensitive to the heat. Oh, yes, if you're going to have arms, legs, and head for a doll, they should emerge somewhere near the same color when baked. Quite a trick if they're done in separate batches. You just have to keep looking and comparing the tones, and pulling the small parts before they get too dark. to reflect ,I was MM> I found that I could bake acrylic (flat back) eyes right in the MM> head and have an entirely closed head. I bake at 255 degrees for MM> 12-17 min. (But my heads are quite small, like 2" high or sometimes 3. MM> And of course, be cause the heads are small, the Super Sculpey is just MM> a 1/8" skin over an aluminum foil ball. ) BC> That's one I'm going to have to experiment with. I've got an order in fo BC> about 25 sets of eyes, some of them flat backed. I'll have to see what BC> happens. One lady on the dollmaking list said that she uses Kemper BC> eyelashes and puts them on before she bakes her doll and they don't urn BC> off. That's hard to believe, but I'm going to try it. I've never worked with dolls big enough to require attached eyelashes. Yes, it is hard to believe. Kemper eyelashes must be made of something different than plastic bristle brushes, then. For I once tried to bake cat whiskers (cut from a plastic-bristle household brush), and they melted. But if you're going to do any quantities of dolls, it might be worth sacrificing a pair to see if they'll bake okay. It might save some time. But it seems like getting them in place would dent the eyelid so it didn't look nice. Were they the adhesive-baked stick on kind, and if so, what did she do about that part to keep the goo from oozing? If not, I don't see how she got them in place without mis-shaping the features of the soft clay. Marilee ... --- PPoint 1.88 * Origin: SonShine Corner - Oregon Coast USA (1:356/4.3)
