For instance, if you wanted a really secure house, you could have steel shutters over every window, 5 locks on the front door, etc, but it would take half an hour to lock up just because you popped out to the shops to get a packet of fags! Similar sort of thing with viruses - you can't really expect people to run virus scanners that much if it takes hours to scan a HD. And then what about TSR performance? .......................................................................... Not for the first time you raise an interesting point. I'd suggest a simple rule: if you're relatively inexperienced with computers and software, and you come across a warning about a virus on the Inet, _assume_ that people more knowledgable than yourself have seen it, too, and _assume_ that they will "sound the alarm". If, after a reasonable period (a day or so) you _haven't_ seen anything about the "new virus", then post a _question_, as opposed to posting a "warning". If someone posted here "I've heard of a new virus called "Good Times". Is it a problem, or what?" he would be sure to get an answer, and _without_ the flames attendant on "Hey, there's this new virus which you can get from Email!!!! Here's what to watch for!!!! (screed follows)". But, such is probably too much to ask for. And you don't need a decompression program for self-extracting archives. Indeed, the "average user" wouldn't necessarily know that THISPROG.EXE was a self-extracting archive as opposed to a "real" executable, so an AV that can process it properly has a place in the world. Something that should almost _never_ be necessary. The problem here is one of approach - you scan new software on the installation media, and you scan new downloads from networked systems. You scan them when you get them. You don't need to scan the entire hard drive, every day, if you follow that simple precaution.
