How many times will you have to be told that, to get RC> infected, you have to _execute_ the software that causes the RC> infection? RC> Not reading an infected disk. Not writing to a disk with an infected RC> boot sector. Isn't infection an invasion of an unwanted foriegn body?.. let me just check the dictionary here. ok, contamination of. Now that being the case by reading in a file to memory or writing out to a disk you can in this way infect a machine. The symptoms of viral infection is seen when the virus is executed. Take the body analogy: We all breath, we have to. A PC has to have a diskdrive. When we breath we can breath in virii, thus becoming infected. A PC requires software you get software from a disk, during the read/write it picks up a virus, it is now infected. The body does not feel the symptoms of infection until the virus is able to be triggered, either low immune system etc. So now the body, that could have been infected a week ago is now feeling the symptoms of that virus attack. To trigger a virus it has to be executed, until then it remains infected but doesn't show any symptoms. Cya, Pete --- GoldED/386-2.50+ & FMail 1.22a+ * Origin: Wagga Wagga!? Where the hell next? BH> It seems to me that antivirus programs should refuse to run if they BH> have been tampered with. Most of them do a self-check. But then a lot of viruses disinfect files as they're opened, and re-infect on close. Renders the self-check somewhat pointless against such viruses, don't you think? There are ways to fight such things, but then the virus authors aren't without other tricks also. The second point you made is the correct one. Never assume any program is safe from virus attack. BH> FC /B A:PROGRAM.EXE C:\PROGRAM\PROGRAM.EXE BH> If it differs, then you know something was playing with the program. Consider the point I made earlyer. The only good this'll do, is to infect your secondary copy with the virus. The ONLY way to protect a scanner from being infected, is to make sure the virus isn't there when you scan. Easyest way to do that is the old clean boot trick. This other stuff is somewhat pointless, really. It's quite possible to write a reasonably effective virus scanner in a batch file using standard DOS commands, so long as you boot and run it from a clean disk, with all the DOS commands also on that disk. Throw in a check-summer and you'll catch 99.9% of the viruses out there. nevets ...
