Has anyone else noticed that Jerome Kersey bears a striking resemblence to a bald Denzel Washington or that Gheorge Muresan looks like Jerry Lewis' 7-7 twin brother? :-) **** Thank God, the Irabu Incident is over. What gets me about this is that when it all started, Irabu was so humble and said that he was just happy to be able to play in America but then when it became apparent that the Yankees were interested (and the extra money that went with that interest), Irabu *suddenly* had a long time dream of playing for the Yankees. I think that the Padres are better off without this guy. **** Well, they finally got around to firing Adelman and once again, Golden State misses the point. They're talking about *maybe* hiring Bob Hill. Wait a minute, folks, this guy couldn't understand were the REAL problems where at on the Spurs (No, NOT Rodman) and now he's suddenly going to find the problem on the Warriors (Something that management hasn't done YET) -- I don't think so. Mark Price KNOWS where the problem is and so do many of the players BUT ownership doesn't want to trade him away -- Latrell Sprewell. They chose to put the blame of the feud between him and Hardaway on Hardaway and look where Miami is with the *wrong* man and where Golden State is with the *right* man. Mark Price complained (Shouldn't that have been the first clue for management?) about Sprewell during the year and that *should* have carried a lot more weight since he NEVER did that in Cleveland. If the owners for Golden State don't rid themselves of Sprewell, they'll be losing some of their better talent when they decide to play with someone else who wants to win games, not scoring titles. Maybe Golden State DOES deserve Bob Hill. **** Speaking of coaching vacancies, it looks like *maybe* Larry Bird might fill one in Indiana while Larry Brown *could* fill one in Boston. Personally, I don't think that either is right for the job. Bird, no offense, is really the best GM prospect available and really shouldn't be coaching because he'd be wasting his talents. He's got an eye for talent; even better than Kevin McHale. Brown, well, like him or not, you HAVE to admit that he's not a long-term stay with any team. But then again, maybe that's what the Celtics need. Bill Fitch took the Celtics as far as he could until they outgrew him and then K.C. drove them to 2 more championships. My choices.... Boston - Brian Hill. Whether Penny wants to admit it or not, Hill kept that team together over the last two years with some damn decent coaching. My second choice would be Dennis Johnson because if you're going to give a former Celtic the job then why not him. Hell, he was a lot smarter player than M.L..:-) Golden State - Bob Hill. They deserve him. Philadelphia - Bobby Knight because someone needs to go in there and kick some butt (Especially the one that's attached to Iverson). Ok, since that's not going to happen....Chuck Daly but only if he's ALLOWED to do whatever he wants. If not, why not Mo Cheeks? Indiana - Dennis Johnson. Denver - If they don't plan on spending any money then THEY deserve Bob Hill more than Golden State but if they do, Paul Westphal. Orlando - *IF* they don't keep Richie around, I think that they need to hire a baby sitter to take care of Penny until he decides to either grow up or leave the franchise. **** I had to laugh at Mike Lupica giving Tiger Woods hell for letting Fuzzy hang for several days. Hell, the incident went unreported for nearly a week and then Lupica expects that Tiger should give out an immediate sound bite. The reputations for both parties could have been ruined far more if Tiger had given the press the kind of sound bite that sends Lupica's kind into a feeding frenzy but Tiger chose to give a more substantial response. Certainly Fuzzy didn't do himself much good by his actions a few days later. Maybe Fuzzy should think seriously about not being so flippant. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Does your Big Unit have a Big Hurt? Back in the 1940s, before television was a factor, sportswriters used to invent events, or distort them so badly that they themselves would become the center of the story. Having grown up in Boston, I'll give you two infamous events - 1) The 1946 World Series, game 7, Boston Red Sox at St. Louis Cardinals. Late in the game, Enos Slaughter races from first to home on a hit to score the winning run. Al Hirshberg of the Boston Herald writes that Johnny Pesky held on to the ball too long on a relay, costing the Red Sox the game and the world's championship. The game was in St. Louis, no TV back to Boston. Only one problem, he didn't hang on to the ball too long, according to eyewitnesses. Still, Pesky wore the goat horns. A few days later, Hirshberg "absolved" Pesky for his "mistake" but the damage has been done. Books have been written about the play, exonerating Pesky, but still, many misinterpret the events of that day. 2) The career of Dave "the Colonel" Egan (beware of anyone who calls himself "Colonel"). He was a sportswriter for a seedy tabloid, now mercifully defunct, formally called the Boston Daily Record but known more familiarly as the Daily Wretched. Egan was a so-so sportswriter who made a career out of bashing Ted Williams. By the time Ted Williams had his day in Cooperstown, Egan had gone to what many presume to be a warmer hemisphere. His successors reported that someone yelled "hey what do you think Dave Egan is thinking today?" They claimed that Ted replied "F*** Dave Egan!". A series of nasty columns appeared in the Wretched that day. One little problem. This exchange of words never took place. Oh, yes, the Wretched backtracked, said that they had bad info, Ted's real nice, etc. etc. but gee whiz, how could we write something so nasty.? And the grundgy tabloid, the Boston Herald, used to have regular bashing of Roger Clemens, even going so far as to write an article that insinuated that he caused the death of a young man with Down's Syndrome because he didn't sign an autograph for his Mom. Fortunately, writers who pull stunts like this today are quickly discredited and don't last long. --- * Origin: (1:324/127) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E5100005 Date: 04/30/97 From: TENZIN KHANGSAR Time: 07:08pm \/To: ANYBODY (Read 2 times) Subj: NBA Hey, anybody out there like basketball?
