If this were the Grizzlies 9th or 10th season, I ->might agree that they were one of the worst but they not even that ->bad for a second year expansion team. :) Man, don't even get me started on the Grizzlies.. I heard today that to match the *fewest* amount of wins by an expansion team over its first two seasons, they'd have to win 6 of their last 7 games. One could argue that it's not really their fault, given that they're not allowed the first pick and had to take 6th or 7th in their first ever draft... but I would just say that they really really stink. :) and leave it at that. As for the Boston stuff..... well, I don't know where you're writing from Ed, but out here in Vancouver we get little more than boxscores when it comes to the Celtics. That's just not enough to go on when getting into an debate with you. I think it comes down to the way you say this team is better because at least they're planning ahead, but I just think they are treating this season as if it were a bad dream, and hoping that ignoring it will make it go away. They lost again, to the slumping Cavs today. I guess with my boxscores I just look at in on a numbers basis and I have a hard time seeing how a 20 something wins team is worse than a 13 or 14 win team. Not that I don't know anything about their team.. but I don't know enough to get into an argument about who's playing for a paycheque and who's playing for pride. -*- TurboEDIT v1.60a+ [MSP96] --- Ezycom V1.48g0 01fa0167 * Origin: Milky Way, Langley, BC [604] 532-4367 (1:153/307) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E4500002 Date: 04/02/97 From: DAVE NEUMAN Time: 11:40pm \/To: OSCAR VELASCO (Read 0 times) Subj: Goalie interference or no ->I need your opinion on this for my research. Thanks in advance. I happened to write a decent-length message about this on my local BBS a few weeks back.. it came after a ridiculous call that went against my team and pretty much cost them the game.. the play is described in some length in the message which I'm about to upload.. Didn't really read your message, just noticed that it was about the crease rule and that you wanted peoples opinions. So sorry if there's repeated stuff in here. (Btw I was really really pissed off when I wrote this :) Message starts now: Anyone else here think that disallowed goal by Bret Hedican should've been counted? In today's game against Florida, it was 2-2 in the second when Brian Noonan skated around the net and put a perfect pass out into the slot for a streaking Hedican, who blew a one timer past Vanbeeeesbrock. The goal was disallowed because a Canucks player supposedly had his skate in the crease. A few things: - The Canucks' players skate was only just barely in (this is the weakest point, because the rule states that any part of the skate is in at all, and it's no goal.. but I think that's pretty dumb, and so do a lot of others) - It's very questionable wheter the players skate was in the crease BEFORE the puck completely crossed the line! I don't know if the goal judges thought to look at this aspect, but it was sure called off in a hurry so I doubt it.. - I know for a fact they didn't consider whether the Canucks player had been PUSHED into the crease, because if they had run it through their f*cking skulls, they would've seen that he was clearly tangled up with a Florida player who was draped all over his back. Bottom line: This rule is bullsh*t. The rule should be this (this is so simple, it pains me to think why the NHL hasn't thought of it yet) ********************************************************************* Interfering with the goalie outside the crease: Legal Screening the goalie while standing outside the crease: Legal Screening the goalie while standing inside the crease: Illegal, goal is disallowed Interfering with goalie in the crease: Illegal, goal disallowed and two-minute minor called In the crease, but not interfering with or screening the goalie (at all): Legal, goal stands ********************************************************************* It's that goddamned simple. If anyone can find fault with those five rules, please tell me. This is going to come up in the playoffs, and it'll probably come up in overtime, cosidering the crease crashing and screening that goes on in the extra frames. Let's pray it doesn't come up in a Stanley Cup deciding situation.. -*- TurboEDIT v1.60a+ [MSP96] --- Ezycom V1.48g0 01fa0167 * Origin: Milky Way, Langley, BC [604] 532-4367 (1:153/307) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E4500003 Date: 04/04/97 From: BRUCE MARSHALL Time: 10:47am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: Trivia question Hi all Trivia buffs, Here a hrd question for everyone. Don't ever under-estimate the worth of a guy like Boggs. I don't know how far you go back but Boggs-like hitters used to be the rule and not the exception. Boggs gets on base a heck of a lot more than a lot of ".290" speedsters. If you look at how many runs he scored AS a leadoff hitter, you'd be hard-pressed to find some of those *weenies* that did as well as he did (and that's even taking Fenway into consideration). --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: On the 7th day, God created the Dallas Cowboys (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E4500005 Date: 04/04/97 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 06:52pm \/To: DAVE NEUMAN (Read 0 times) Subj: Disadvantage of being a s Dave was hit by a Randy Johnson fastball for uttering: DN> I've had a sudden and incredible change of heart, and now I'm saying DN> that he is their only future star instead. Sue me. That all depends on how things go. If he's forced into playing center, he's never going to get his due (Look at the difference that it's made in Laettner's game now that he no longer plays center). Williams and Wesley can be future stars, especially if they get Duncan. Duncan can fill a big hole in the middle AND he'll be surround by players that want to be there and despite their record, try like hell to win. Despite all their injuries and the negative press, those players haven't given up and they're primed for a big improvement next year. DN> argue that it's not really their fault, given that they're not allowed DN> the first pick and had to take 6th or 7th in their first ever draft... DN> but I would just say that they really really stink. :) and leave it at DN> that. I'd say that was a valid argument. The first pick could have garnered them either Garnett OR a lower choice and a couple of solid youngsters. Another bad season could have given them the choice between Camby, Iverson or Abdur-Rahim. As far as BAD, I don't think that they're the worst of any of the expansion teams. They've got a couple of players that they can build on in Abdur-Rahim and Reeves. I don't think that they have as many players to build on as the Celtics, however, they're in better shape than some of the other expansion teams that had more of an advantage. DN> have a hard time seeing how a 20 something wins team is worse than a 13 DN> or 14 win team. Not that I don't know anything about their team.. but I DN> don't know enough to get into an argument about who's playing for a DN> paycheque and who's playing for pride. As I said, this team is playing to win night after night. That 78-79 squad that started the season couldn't give a rat's butt about winning or losing and it wasn't until they started getting rid of those players that they started doing better. If the Celtics had been healthy all year (and I'll even discount Radja), they'd be in the 25-30 victory range. It's really hard for a team to play well when they've got so many people in and out of the lineup like they have BUT they have put in the effort. I've seen teams with more talent and fewer injuries than this one roll over and die after the All-Star break (Look at how injuries have killed the Spurs this season). --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Bill James, James Dunlop. Reminds me of a young Paul Westphal, who the Celtics traded away for Charlie Scott after Westphal (IMHO) single-handedly blew the 1975 playoffs against the Bullets. He refused to play team defense, insisting on running around trying to steal the ball. Phil Chenier had an all-world series, even if the Bullets lost later to the Warriors. Scott helped them win the 1976 championship, while Westphal went on to win many individual honors at Phoenix. And your original assessment - this team has a pretty good base of talent. And no one up here is screaming about how dismal the current state of Celtics affairs are. There is a plan in place, and it's working. Wesley-Walker-Williams are developing. Radja, Brown, Ellison, and Barros will be gone if someone takes them.
