Each January I like to loosen up the THC> rules a bit and solicit feedback on my moderation THC> style in the VID_GAME echo. While I am always open to THC> feedback, I usually limit it to netmail or email, as I THC> figure we'd all rather read messages about home THC> videogame consoles instead of messages about the echo itself. THC> Rule 5, which prohibits discussing moderator action in THC> the echo, is suspended until February 14, 1998. If THC> you have any questions or comments about the echo, THC> suggested rules or policy change, or whatever, you may THC> post them in the VID_GAME echo until that date. I THC> will try to respond to all messages. Starting Feb 15, THC> such discussion goes back to netmail. THC> Troy H. Cheek, VID_GAME Echo Moderator I'm going to make you regret ever making the suspension! Just kidding. -) But seriously, I do have some real feedback. In particular, it would have to do with PC vs. console messages. Personally, I feel that those kinds of messages (where the author intends to compare PCs and consoles directly) are valid and should be allowed in the echo, presuming of course that the conversation is balanced (so that PCs don't overwhelm it). The main reason is that quite a few PSX (and even Saturn & N64) titles exist on the PC, and vice versa. As such, trying to seperate the two from some discussions is nigh-impossible. Also, PCs themselves are becoming very valid (albeit expensive) game machines in themselves. The main differences are just quantity and quality; more RAM, better 3D hardware, etc. True, things are more complicated on the PC, but it's not that hard and it should be getting easier. Thanks for opening up to us people "down here," and let's hope that any changes are for the better. --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: BitByters BBS, Rockland ON, Can. CHEEK (Read 0 times) Subj: Sega Katana (not Dural) THC> Details about the new Sega system, codenamed "Dural," have been THC> leaking out ever since MMWIRE discovered the project early last year THC> in documents Sega's one-time partner 3Dfx Interactive [TDFX] filed THC> with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Sega is said to be THC> working with Microsoft [MSFT] on the new platform's operating system, THC> which will be Windows-compatible and may be able to run at least some THC> PC games (MMW, Sept. 12). GT Interactive [GTIS] CEO Ron Chaimowitz THC> says Dural will also have more RAM than PlayStation. The Windows THC> compatibility should make developing for Dural less expensive than THC> otherwise since developers will be able to use existing PC technology THC> to build the games. Just some corrections... according to Next Generation magazine, the final "mystery code name" for Sega's new system is Katana, based on the Samurai sword. They say that this name is popular enough that it may be used as the official name. Also, Microsoft is indeed going to provide an OS for the Katana, nicknamed Dragon. It'll basically be Windows CE 2.0 (that palmtop OS) with DirectX 5.2. However, it'll take up 8 MB of RAM; so Sega will either have to increase the system RAM to 16 MB (versus the minimum 8), and/or encourage people to code straight to Sega's own OS for better performance. There are a few things that have been confirmed, though, such as the Hitachi 200 MHz CPU, 8 MB of texture RAM and 2 MB of sound RAM. So whatever the Katana turns out to be, it should at least be visually impressive. --- Maximus 3.01 * Origin: BitByters BBS, Rockland ON, Can.
