Our local paper is owned by Belo Corporation of Dallas. It used to be locally owned. I tried their sports writer and he said "I have no idea who maintains that type of information. I don't even know where I would begin. Perhaps if you ever get such a list you can share it with me." Excellent idea, dead end for me. My town is just roughly 46,000 but has two small religious private schools. Before posting in exec, I tried them both. One told me that NCAA published a book that listed all the schools, players, and plaer's stats in every sport of each school that NCAA recognizes. It is published after March Madness. That may be my best bet. Thank you. Don't forget, this NBA is highly diluted - far GC> more diluted than the last year before Bird. Now, it depends on how you look at it. Don't forget that the NBA was just 3 years removed from adding 4 teams to its ranks. The NBA had 3 teams that were 9 years old, 1 that was 5 years old and 4 that were 3 years old. The NBA today has 2 that are 9 years old, 2 that are 8 years old and 2 that are 2 years old. If you go from the year that the Mavs entered the NBA and extend it to today, that's 7 teams in 17 years. If you go back that far from the year before Bird entered the NBA, that's 13 teams in 17 years. GC> was optimism - Bird was on his way, Chris Ford, ML GC> Carr, and Rick Robey were critical building blocks, GC> and Tiny Archibald, believed to be on his way out GC> of town, was asked to stay and take a leadership role. Actually, M.L. was still in Detroit. GC> I can remember the worst ebb - a game in which they GC> came home from a road trip (year before) and they GC> were 2-8. The funniest thing I remember from that season is a game that they had against the Pistons. Detroit was blowing them away when Frankie Sanders got the ball and drove uncontested toward the basket for a dunk. It clanked off the rim back into a Piston's hands and they converted it into an easy basket. I also remember that the TV station in Maine didn't broadcast most of the playoffs for those two years because the Celtics weren't in them. They pre-empted them for Red Sox's games, something that never happened after Bird got there. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Bill James, James Dunlop. Coincidence? I won't touch that with a ten-foot pole.:-) To anyone that's too young, no pun intended, to know what's going on - Tom is referring to the fact that the NBA instituted the lottery the very same year that Ewing graduated. Before they used ping-pong balls, they used cards in envelopes (They use them today but only AFTER the draw) and drew them on stage. Many people around the country noticed that the Knicks' card was dog-earred and thus, felt that the draft was rigged to give New York the rights to Ewing. Given the fact that I believe that Sterno is a lying, manipulative piece of monkey-snot, I don't think that I'd have much credibility when it comes to commenting about what I thought.:-) --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Bill James, James Dunlop. Chicago needs to go 17-1 to tie their record and 18-0 to break it -- I doubt it. I do think that they can go 15-3 to reach 70 wins again. They're now 4 wins away from breaking the 2-year mark. In the race for the 7th spot in the East, Orlando now has a clear schedule advantage over Cleveland. Despite their 3+ game lead over Houston, Utah *could* potentially find themselves only a game ahead of Houston when the season is finished and believe it or not, Miami's schedule still favors them enough that they could still finish a game ahead of the Knicks. Not counting last night's games, Boston is 0-17 against the Atlantic division, 0-9 at home (Believe it or not, they've actually clinched a winning home mark against the Pacific with a 4-2 home record). Utah is 7-0 against the Central at home and 0-6 against them on the road. They're better off when you look at them vs the West (15-3 at home and 13-7 on the road). Houston is 13-6 vs 16-3, Seattle is 14-4 vs 12-6, LA is 14-5 vs 13-6 and Portland is 18-2 vs 10-11. --- TrekEd 1.00 * Origin: Jerry Jones is the Anti-Christ (1:170/1701) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 114 SPORTS Ref: E3K00006 Date: 03/15/97 From: ED GRINNELL Time: 09:24am \/To: ALL (Read 0 times) Subj: A few stats.. * Crossposted in SPORTS * Crossposted in NBA_ECHO In the next 4 messages, I will be listing the records of teams in certain situations. I'm going to start with the *least* important category, wins in games decided by 3 points or less. This category has almost no bearing on who is a viable candidate for winning the NBA championship. ANY team in any given situation can come up with a lucky win and even the best teams can find themselves losing a close game when their *clutch* man misses (Like it or not, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, etc. all missed crucial shots that could have won their teams important playoff games. It just happens and despite their reputations as clutch players, they all miss *at least* one important shot during their careers).
