It's obvious that Mexico isn't as developed as we are and has some problems they need to deal with. Our automobile market is far better than theirs, as you stated, however it does not eliminate their market as a means for more sales. --- GEcho 1.00 * Origin: The Missing Link - 14.4 - (703)527-3175 - PCBoard (1:109/194) --------------- FIDO MESSAGE AREA==> TOPIC: 168 PEROT Ref: AGH00004 Date: 12/09/93 From: JOE MICHAEL Time: 05:39pm \/To: KATHY WATKINS (Read 3 times) Subj: NAFTA/GATT dichotomy -=> Quoting Kathy Watkins to Joe Michael <=- JM> I have a posting from internet I will share if you desire - it is a JM> list of anti-NAFTA type quotes by USA*NAFTA corporations who JM> are against GATT! Tell me who said the following about a certain trade agreement and in what context: (1.) We object to the use of an international dispute resolution panel, preempting U.S. authority. Our concern is that U.S. laws will be overriden. (2.) The agreement contains an unfair lack of symmetry. The other countries are protected for 5+ years while the U.S. is immediately subject to the requirements. (3.) The U.S. Trade Representative didn't bargain well enough. He practically sold us down the river. (4.) Foreign panelists on the international dispute resolution boards tend to be nationalists, whereas U.S. panelists are internationalists. Answer: These statements were all made by USA*NAFTA-ish corporate representatives (Motorola and others) at a panel discussion of GATT carried today on C-SPAN. The discussion was sponsored by the Northeast- Midwest Congressional coalition. Guess it's time for Al Gore to go do his Smoot-Hawley thing to the corporate types. ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- Hark! Is that a sucking sound? - Part II ___-------------------------------------------------------------------- Wall Street Journal, 12/1/93 MAJOR MEXICAN BUS MAKER PLANS TO BUY MOTOR COACH Phoenix - Consorcio G Grupo Dina SA agreed to buy Motor Coach Industries International Inc., a Phoenix-based former unit of Dial Corp., in a $337 million stock swap. The transaction would combine the largest U.S. bus- making company with one of Mexico's biggest bus and truck manufacturers. Under the agreement, $16.72 of a new class of Dina common stock would be swapped for each of the 20.1 million common shares of Motor Coach, which went public in August. The companies said that the price represents a 25% premium from the $13.375 average of Monday's high and low Motor Coach stock quotes. Craig R. Lentzsch, Motor Coach's executive vice president-finance, said the transaction is subject to completion of a definitive agreement, regulatory and shareholder approval, and termination or amendment of certain agreements between Motor Coach and its 69%-owned Canadian unit, Motor Coach Industries, Ltd. ___-------------------------------------------------------------------- It may be premature, but I'm beginning to see a pattern. You take the U.S. company over with your Mexican corporate arm and - one might suspect - quietly transfer the production from the American facilities to Mexico. With the control vested in Mexico, there is no way for nosy U.S. citizens to butt in anywhere in the process. Maybe THAT'S why Elders wants to legalize drugs - they In regards to heroin, in the 70's Great Britain got tired of trying to enforce it's drug laws and legalized heroin. You could just sign up and become a card carrying druggy. Certain categories of crime did go down as junkies could get a fix without bopping someone over the head for their wallet/purse, or breaking into a house to steal things. Certainly heroin as an underworld trade dried up right quick. A positive side effect is that they found most junkies eventually wean them- selves off of heroin. This effect was attributed to growing up. The US of course pursued legal intervention and methodone, with no noticible effect. Maybe domesticating junkies is more cost effective than hunting them. I don't do drugs, to include alcohol and tobacco. I include this statement to (hopefully) forstall any commentary or speculation as to why I might defend a legalization position. I just know of a study that supports such a position, and it may be worth looking into.
